New 6A and six man numbers

Good. I am happy, because teams like White Deer and Shamrock are not able to compete anymore in 11man due to lack of numbers. This will kick start some old rivalries from back in my day:) C'mon Mclean and Shamrock! Call it " The battle of the mediocre"

16 D is very interesting. It appears that Charter Schools in districts that have 3 or more high schools will now likely have to play 11 man regardless of how small they are.

As I understand it, Charter Schools will be placed in the lowest conference of the public schools district where it is located. For example, if there was a charter high school here in Seguin, it would be placed in 4A (where Seguin HS) is located. If it was in the nearby Comal ISD, where there are three high schools -- a 5A, 4A, and 3A, the charter school would be placed in the 3A district. Only exception is if the actual enrollment of the charter school is higher than the numbers of the public school district (which, I guess could happen in 1A or possibly 2A).

We can call this the "Deion Sanders" or "Prime Prep" rule, after that school which tried to join UIL this year.

My expectation is that charter schools will be withdrawing from UIL for extra-curricular purposes, since most will be totally uncompetitive under those rules.

Alternatives are T-CAL, which has been accepting charter schools (including Prime Prep) or there is an Austin-based organization that is organizing athletic and academic events for charter schools (Texas Charter School Academic & Athletic League; http://www.texascharter.org/)

I received notice from the UIL yesterday that the Commissioner of Education signed off on the 6 conference allignment. This was the final step in sixman (Division II Basketball) schools getting their own conference. Starting in 2014 104.9 will be the cut off for class A and the only football game that will be played in class A will be sixman. End of a long road.

Not sure that TCSSA would be a viable alternative for athletics- It appears that they do not have 6 man- only Flag Football...

Seems like with the numbers of schools that they appear to have, that "real" football would be a viable option, but apparently not...

I will become Shamrock's Number #1 Fan if they decide to play 6-man! If there is anyone out there reading from Shamrock...hire a 6-man weathered coach, play a year of outlaw in 2013 and compete for a playoff spot in 2014!

Shell out some money and perks and get a GREAT Coach! Maybe this could be the 2014 or 2015 Headline for Six-Man Football come December..."Forget Lucky 7...It's Lucky 6 for Shamrock!" the headlines would basically write themselves!

"Irish Eyes Are Smiling as Shamrock's Lucky 6 wins 6-Man Title!"

High Plains Drifter...signed as head coach for the Fighting Irish...man that would be something wouldn't it!!!

I thought that 6-man schools would have there own classification for track and basketball...reading that pdf if seems that it is just like it has always been but the number was moved back to 104.9 (which is what I think it was in the 1950s)

"Schools with an enrollment of 104.9 or lower may choose to participate in six-man football (Confernce A) or may opt to play eleven-man football (Conference AA) but remain in the smaller conference for all other applicable activities"

Add a couple dozen 6 man football schools looking for relief from the UIL rules, and all of a sudden you have a football division.

Basically, my read is UIL would rather not have charter schools as members. TAPPS doesn't accept them (as their rules do not permit tax-supported schools; there are three schools grandfathered -- two prison schools and the Tx. School for the Deaf in Austin); TCAF has one charter school (Westlake Academy) and T-CAL does accept them.

The fact is this new alligment is for folks that play division II Basketball. There are some schools that can play sixman that want to play elevenman. That will never change. So you just cant say its a sixman conference. Just as there are schools that can play sixman that do not play football at all. This new allignment will allow 104.9 schools to compete for a state championship in tennis, CC, Golf, Academics and OAP with folks their own size. yes we already have football and BB (Division II) and this year track. There have been folks working on this for some 30 years now. To say it is the same as it has always has been is not an educated statement. Thanks HPD, but the thanks goes out to alot of folks that have worked for this for many years, Coach Shely, Coach Miller, Coach Grill, Coach Maddox to name a few. I dont expect everyone to understand it. Just be proud for the small schools. No matter what kind of football want to they play.

My post was more of an open ended question and I was seeking an better explaination of it with my post...I was not making a statement saying it is the same as it has always been...I think you read what I ways saying the wrong way CG. I was seeking a better explaination of it not making an "uneducated statement" sorry it seemed that way and I know that folks have been working hard on this for years.

Haha, that's funny. (& no, I'm not saying those men shouldn't be credited with working to get us to this point - CG we DO appreciate your work as well)

Questions:

1) Can a school that is small enough to play 3A opt to play 4A instead? Or do they have to play in the classification that the numbers puts them in.
2) If the above answer is yes, can they play 4A in one sport, say football, and choose to play 3A in the other sports?

Yes they can elect to play in a higher conference. They have to move up in all sports and academics. The reason Class sixman football to 2-A 11-man football and to be able to play in lower class in all other sports is different is that the UIL does not feel that a school should be forced to play sixman football. These are two different types of football. When you move up in the other conferences you are still playing the same type of football. 11-man....Oneday That was a poor choice of words I used. sorry. Just glad the allignment was signed by Commissioner. Look forward to Division II State track meet this year.

Thanks, that answered my next question too. I don't see it as forcing anything. I just feel that if a six man size school CHOOSES to play in a higher division, that choice should be extended for all sports.

hornkeeper

so since the smallest division for baseball is 2A, any sixman school that wants to play baseball will have to "choose" to play up. Should that force their basketball, track, tennis to play 2A .... oh, and how about making their football team play 11 man in 2A?

The decision schools under 100 ( or soon to be 104.5 ) have is to play a different sport - 11 man football instead of 6 man - not move up a division. If a community is tied to 11 man by tradition and emotion and wants to continue playing it, shouldn't they have the option to do that without putting their girls basketball, boys tennis, etc... at a disadvantage?

And by the way, the only reason I've ever heard of a team choosing to play up a classification is because travel in their current situation would make participating in sports financially and logistically problematic. No school does it "just because" and not without a lot of thought
