My Alignment proposal to the UIL

My realignment proposal to the UIL
For the past six alignments I have created my own set of alignments with the idea of making things more fair for schools and resolving some of the chief complaints, those being disparity in size among the largest and smallest schools in each classification, and travel distance. I have taught in different functions at school districts including a district with multiple 5A schools (Now 6A), a 3A (Now 4A) district, three 2A (Now 3A) districts, and two 1A districts that played 6-man football. I have coached football and track, been a band director, directed one-act play, and coached various academic and debate teams, and feel that I have a unique insight into the various aspects of the classification process and the challenges these schools face.
Once again, I decided this time to follow the trends already being established by the UIL and I came up with a plan that divides division 1A as you have already done. In my proposal we would actually take this a step further. In class 1A we divide football into two divisions. This is actually a very good idea and helps to get rid of the disparity from top to bottom. There is no reason, however, to have this division in football and not extend it to basketball, spring sports, and academic events. The smaller schools really cannot compete against schools up to four times their size, not just in football, but also in basketball, track and field, One-act play, band, and academic events, and this would give many of them a shot at success for the first time. In addition, by having only one district for all sports, the experience of having real district rivalries is increased as well.
In my proposal division 1A follows what the UIL has already done. I have renamed the divisions within this as they should be; calling them 1A and 2A respectively. I have also added a division to the top end among the 11-man schools in order to end the disparity argument. Most of the districts have 5 to six members, which the UIL has already demonstrated that they are willing to use. The argument of distance is moot, as most schools will be able to play all of the same teams they have played previously, and will be able to choose more of the teams they play, unlike the unfortunate teams who had been placed into ten team districts in past alignments, especially those of West Texas who already had the furthest travel times of any schools in Texas.
The top six divisions all have a fairly even number of football-playing schools in them, filled out with schools that do not elect to play football, so there is no division with teams packed into districts like sardines, like those which in some cases exist currently and have existed in the past. There are fewer byes and more football districts than have existed in the past in the smallest division of 11-man schools division as well. With the schools being more even as to size, the necessity of two divisions within a classification is negated and a clear-cut winner in each classification can be crowned, although that will be left up to the coaches in those divisions as it is currently. In the 6-man divisions there are fourteen football districts, and sixteen districts for all other activities.
The alignment took me approximately a week to complete in the afternoons after school each day, utilizing Google Earth (Which allows for far more accuracy than a pin in a map and string.) I am sure is by no means error free, but serves to prove the feasibility of such a plan.

What a COLOSSAL waste of time.

You run into the same problems UIL runs into... Geography.

Good Luck getting your proposition passed.

First, no proposal that makes sense will ever be adopted. That rule holds true in UIL, Congress, and pretty well most of life.

Second, I remember reading a few years ago that the UIL starts with a computer program alignment. And every time, it puts Del Rio H.S. in the same district as the Midland/Odessa schools. Talk about a long Tuesday night road trip.

Sinfonian, are you looking at a musical score or a map? Why on God's green earth would you put teams in the same county in different districts? UIL did the same thing....... We need to stop insisting on " fairness" and look at common sense.

This plan is to show the feasibility of dividing things into districts in this way. At the 6-man level, you could use the current alignment that the UIL has put forth and prove the same point. You say that the UIL would not accept my proposals, but when they divided the 1A schools into two separate divisions, they did just that AFTER my proposal was read to the UIL board. (I was actually invited to read it myself, or given the option of allowing them to propose it for me, which I took.) I won't claim sole responsibility, but it was definitely in their heads. The issue with six man isn't really feasibility since the current division already proves that. Currently this proposal is more to demonstrate the need to extend current football divisions to basketball, Spring events, UIL academics, and One-ACT play. The big feasibility argument occurs in the 11-man schools being divided into six divisions, which I think I have proven fairly well. No one is ever going to be fully satisfied with any alignment because someone will always think that they should be in a district with (insert name here) who we have been rivals with for years. At least with this proposal, you would be in the same district for all major sporting and academic events.

sin......, I admire your work, but will take the current realignment over yours. No disrepect to former district mates, but no thanks for the memories. Ha

Yeah, I think if I had it to do over, I might follow their current trend of having 16 districts made up of mostly 4 schools for football, padded with non-football schools for other events. In the past they avoided such small districts, but the past two alignments, they have shown more of a willingness to use them. I might have to redo my 1A and 2A to reflect that.
