I'm at a school where our numbers have dropped drastically since the last snapshot. We are looking into the possibility of going 6 man. I have seen many games but have never coached it. I need all the help that I can in the event that we do play 6 man next year.
Thanks!
Best thing would be to contact some of the "wise men" of six-man football (I can start with guys like Mike Reed @ Throckmorton, Jerry Burkhart @ Richland Springs, Vance Jones @ Balmorhea, Brice Helton @ Dallas Covenant, Terry Crawford @ Abbott and I'm sure there are dozens more) and ask for film and ideas.
Pick up a copy of C H Underwood's book, Six-Man Football (
http://www.amazon.com/Six-Man-Football- ... 1931721564) as it's an excellent starting point to learn the program. You can download the difference in rules from the UIL website (
http://www.uiltexas.org/files/athletics ... ual_13.pdf , sixman rules start on p. 129).
And don't hesitate to call sixman coaches. As a group, I have never seen coaches so willing to share their knowledge of the game with each other. The old joke is that when you go talk to the 11 man guys, they'll tell you about 80 or 90% of what you need to know to make their system work -- the sixman guys tell you the whole thing.
This spring, if Jerry does his Clinic in Richland Springs, make a plan to go. (And if I do my Clinic again, you're invited ... still working on that, as there is going to be a change in location and such.) What you learn sitting in the presentations may be exceeded by what you can learn by asking other coaches -- speakers and others attending.
And the rule still is ... if you don't block and tackle, you don't win.
