Help Needed

I'm at a school where our numbers have dropped drastically since the last snapshot. We are looking into the possibility of going 6 man. I have seen many games but have never coached it. I need all the help that I can in the event that we do play 6 man next year.
Thanks!

Best thing would be to contact some of the "wise men" of six-man football (I can start with guys like Mike Reed @ Throckmorton, Jerry Burkhart @ Richland Springs, Vance Jones @ Balmorhea, Brice Helton @ Dallas Covenant, Terry Crawford @ Abbott and I'm sure there are dozens more) and ask for film and ideas.

Pick up a copy of C H Underwood's book, Six-Man Football (http://www.amazon.com/Six-Man-Football- ... 1931721564) as it's an excellent starting point to learn the program. You can download the difference in rules from the UIL website (http://www.uiltexas.org/files/athletics ... ual_13.pdf , sixman rules start on p. 129).

And don't hesitate to call sixman coaches. As a group, I have never seen coaches so willing to share their knowledge of the game with each other. The old joke is that when you go talk to the 11 man guys, they'll tell you about 80 or 90% of what you need to know to make their system work -- the sixman guys tell you the whole thing.

This spring, if Jerry does his Clinic in Richland Springs, make a plan to go. (And if I do my Clinic again, you're invited ... still working on that, as there is going to be a change in location and such.) What you learn sitting in the presentations may be exceeded by what you can learn by asking other coaches -- speakers and others attending.

And the rule still is ... if you don't block and tackle, you don't win.

I'm not a coach and if you have seen some games you probably realize this. As FA said, ther is no substitute for blocking and tackling (angle of attack for a DB is very important too) but have your guys start running windsprints till they puke starting yesterday. Speed kills (usually) in 6man. Good luck in moving up to it.

Take away one of the traditional WRs and then take away the offensive line from 11 man. Now expect your RB(s), QB(s) and TE/WR(s) to snap, block, run, run routes and run off defensives players. Toss the ball back to your best player and let him run or run/pass to open receivers. Defensively, think basketball - if you play a zone better be able to cover all your areas and in man better be able to play tight defense and make open field tackles.

Thats the game in a nutt shell!

Take all your players 5 miles out and let them run back. Normally kids playing 11 man think they are in shape. But most cant last but half a game in six-man. Open field tackling, throw a kid in a pen with wild half grown goats and tell him to go till he catches one. Them take them out to the 5 section hilly pasture and have them round up goats on foot. Then they will start getting the ideal of playing six-man football.

The main sixman clinic will be in Wichita falls. Also coach burkhart has been doing a clinic at richland springs the past several years. I would call him and see if he is doing his clinic this year. If you want you can message me for any film. I can put you in touch with some one who has a wide variety of offenses and defenses.
