This is not a post complaining about the rankings. I know there are all kinds of possibilities using the transitive property of who beat who in games played by others, but I need help with this one. Silverton varsity was favored by 33 over the Valley JV. Valley JV wins by 45 in third quarter. Silverton gains 3 points and gains several positions in the rankings. What other game could have silverton played that would offset the large unexpected loss.

Here is my take on it.

Who knows what the rating of Valley JV is. Do the same players play JV every week? Are there injuries? How many other varsity or "rated" teams have they played? There is a reason that JV ratings are not published. They don't matter. So I would venture to say that Silverton moving up 3 rating points is a result of their previous opponents moving up, therefore SOS got stronger and caused them to move up. I can't say for sure, but it looks like the game against a "who knows" rated team was not factored in.
