Football Weather!

Well the cold front came in across the state.. which makes me wonder, what is your favorite type of football weather?

I played and practiced in 110 degree heat along with 24 degrees with snow and sleet. I remember the cold games more.

How about you?

It's funny you say that about remembering the cold games. As a fan, I feel the same way. But I think that may be more with I equate cold weather with playoff football. The warmer weather reminds me of the start of the season, which can also be exciting, but not like playoff (or district) football.

Cold weather for sure. I remember vividly my junior year of high school. I played at Godley when we were a small 2A school. Bi-District round of the 2000 playoffs against Clifton. Cold and sleeting at Waco ISD stadium and we won by 1, 14-13. Next week we played again in the cold against Farmersville at the Gopher Bowl in Grand Prairie and lost to a very good Farmersville team 45-14. But I remember those games more than any other game.

Weather determined the State Class A (11man) Championship in 1963. The George West Longhorns, led by all world, all around athlete Steve Lane should have wiped out the Petersburg Buffaloes, but a true Blizzard, 10 plus inches of snow, you couldn’t see the stands on the other side of the field, and the boys from south Texas had no suitable footwear, and considering most of those kids had NEVER even seen snow, gave an insurmountable advantage to Petersburg, who at the beginning of the season had been picked to be second in their district. They had also played in a 6 in snow storm the week before.
There are several articles in the Lubbock and Plainview papers archives worth looking up and reading. Which only goes to prove my earlier points that talent is not as important as fate, injures and so many other intangibles. Petersburg could have never won but for that blizzard, similar to the Dallas/Green Bay Ice Bowl.
Fate, Circumstances, Luck and timing ultimately can have a much bigger impact on outcomes than pure, raw talent. Playing in a safe, climate controlled stadium has its comfort and advantages but ultimately detracts from the game by controlling or eliminating many important variables.
Just saying...........

I ask this question because today Gordon is playing Morgan once again, and I cant help but think about 1993 when we went to Morgan, at it was about 18 degrees. There was no JV at the time, so we kept the bus running and left them on there after warm-ups. There was freezing rain, sleet, and snow, and it hurt hitting anyone or touching the football. It was our own little Ice Bowl, that I am glad I never had to revisit afterward. Yes it was a district game, but I have never been so happy to get off the field and go home. You can ask the BallBoys about that game... Lyle Campbell and Joe Kostiha.

What I think is worse than sleet or snow is playing in a cold rain. I remember playing Dawson on Oct 19, 1972, my Junior year, it started raining before the game. the temperature fell into the low 40's by game time and probably was in the high 30's by the end of the game. a real mudbowl. We got clobbered because we could not hang onto the ball very well. A wet miserable game.
