SEGUIN — So far in 2009, the Lifegate Falcons (7-0 overall) have been unbeatable.
And while talent has played a huge role in the Falcons’ strong start, head coach John Rabon says that his team’s preparation has been just as big of a factor.
“We very seldom look down the road,” Rabon said. “We try to focus on who we have. What we need to focus on every week is controlling the things we can control and trying to get better.”
In addition to winning the close contests, Lifegate has blown out quite a few lesser opponents, which is what San Antonio Believers Academy (2-4 overall) appears to be on paper. Even so, the first-year program has managed to win a couple of games on the year, which Rabon says is an impressive feat.
Believers has also been on the short side of some lopsided games, however, with its four losses coming by a combined score of 197-49. But Believers does come into its game against Lifegate on a high note, having just throttled San Antonio New Life 52-6 a week ago.
That’s all the more reason for the Falcons to remain focused tonight.
“Again, you have to take it one step at a time,” Rabon said. “This is the first district game and we have to win this if we’re going to have a chance to make the playoffs.”
Rabon also said that his club will be competing with a full roster for the first time in a while, with only the typical bumps and bruises of the season affecting his group.
Kickoff for this TAPPS Division II District 5 opener is set for 7:30 p.m.
