Dead ball penalty

In last nights game, we created a turnover got the fumble and the kid got over excited. We got a 15 yard penalty. All understandable shouldn't of got that excited but with the 15 yard penalty on the turnover they gave us the ball woth 1st and 30 is that correct or should the 15 yards been walked off and then 1st and 15?

Should NOT have been 1st and 30. Until the referee blows the ready for the next play, we're still in transition between possession and it should be a 15-yard penalty but still 1st and 15.

Ran into a similar situation a few weeks ago where a receiver dropped a pass on 4th down and then the safety hit him late out of bounds. Receiver's coach couldn't understand why he wasn't getting a free 1st down.
