Calvert vs Jonesboro

Calvert has so much closing speed on defense, it is hard to consistantly move the ball and score on them. Still should be a fairly close game, but it is hard to imagine Calvert losing this game.

Jonesboro has to score early in my opinion. Calvert offensively is very predictable. Defensively #9, and #4 are studs for Calvert. If Jonesboro can control #9 they have a chance. Good luck to both teams.

Overtime victory for the Trojans of Calvert. Instant Classic. Heart goes out to Jonesboro. Great effort, very deserving of the victory. Great game plan for those conditions. Jonesboro players and Coaches are to be commended. Well Coached group of players. Calvert made big plays down the stretch. KOR by #9 was clutch. Calvert Coach was yelling across the field for his players to get away from the ball. #9 blocked that out and walked over, picked the ball up made a move around the left end and scored. On the ride back home. My friends who witnessed there first sixman game had nothing but great things to say about the game. They had a few bad words for the officials, but that's another story. Good luck next week Trojans, Great season Eagles.

You would think that there would be at least one official on the field who would defend the defense for running into the kicker after blocking the PAT. That is pretty bad.

Worse than bad!!!!! Are you kidding me.....Jonesboro's entire season will probably be tainted by the memory of terribly incompetent officials. I mean the rule is not obscure...I didn't see it, could there have been something so blatant it couldn't be ignored??

Even Calvert ppl were confused about that call (however grateful). My only thoughts to try and make sense of it:
did they rough both the kicker and the holder by two different ppl and does this mean something?
did they consider the kick not blocked, but rather kicked into the line and that meant something?
did they consider the foul a personal foul (they did) and this somehow changed the nature of the call?

Like I said, this is only speculation because nothing really made sense.

I would love to hear from a seasoned official what could be the call.

One thing to note. Calvert's second PAT attempt of the game (to possibly pull within 20-14) looked like it might have been good and the same official called it wide. I was not convinced the official in the EZ was in the right place to see it. Calvert certainly thought it was good.

Overall a great game by Jonesboro. They really pulled out some big fourth downs in the second half or that game doesn't make it to OT even.

Great determination by Calvert. There were several times they could have given up and all hope seemed lost and they didn't.

The very first credibility call was when they gave the ball to Calvert after a 4th down. Jonesboro had to ask the officials to measure it,resulting in a 1st down. Secondly, the whole PAT deal. Third the last play of the game, the ref on Jonesboro side was saying incomplete.I'm not sure who overruled him on that call, then the officials just start walking of the field. I hate to see a season end on poor refs. Go Coyotes!

yes, that fourth down marking and call for Calvert was bad. A) the spot for Jonesboro was bad. I was standing on the field, literally right there and the player got at least a foot further than marked. B) There's no way you call it one way or another without measuring. That was sloppy. It was so close either way... as it turned out, it was a 1/2 a length far enough for the Jonesboro first down... after he had already called first down for Calvert.

I have nothing more on the PAT.

I was also right there on the field on the final play. It was an interception. I believe the ref on the side only saw the player's back and not the ball (he was upfield). The ref in the middle of the field could see it was an interception, as could I.

One you didn't mention was the KO with 7 seconds left. The ref on the Jonesboro side throws the flag for the late hit (which it seemed like since the player was on the ground fielding the ball)... the refs huddle and they call a personal foul on both sides.

The game was strange. Midfield was a mud slide. Jonesboro really handled the conditions well, from a running standpoint. They did fumble on that first drive, as he was having into the end zone and early in the second half, but the conditions were sloppy.

I would love to hear from an official also because considering the 4th down call not being measured just declared a turnover, on such an obviously close spot, and the roughing the kicker call on a blocked kick that would have virtually assured Jonesboro a victory, Is it truly just a case of gross incompetence or is it a question of integrity.....??

More than once when the official on the Jonesboro sideline called a penalty against Calvert the officials would call a meeting in the middle of the field and I could hear the official that was standing on the Calvert sideline telling the official that was on the Jonesboro sideline that made the call that he was just listening to the Jonesboro coaches and that the penalty really didn't happen. Then the official on the Jonesboro side would just cower down to him and then the White hat would over rule the call. And if that wasn't bad enough could someone please tell me why the official that was on Calvert's sideline was yelling at the coaches from Jonesboro to get off the field and the Cavert's coach was on the field right beside that official. In a game of such importance there should be two extra officials in my opinion. Jonesboro did shoot there selves in the foot with the two fumbles and not covering the ball during the kickoff and Calvert played a excellent 2nd half. These boys lift weights and train for several months for the love of the game just to see it ended by horriable officiating!

Can anybody tell us the Chapter that was used last night? As a fan of sixman football and a follower of several teams, its hard to standby and sit idle and watch deserving teams not get a fair shake. I believe both teams suffered last night. Really felt like Jonesboro was better prepared, better Coached, and more deserving of the victory. Calvert kids played hard, Granger stated earlier that they could have given up, but they hung in there. Great individual effort that pushed Calvert to the next round. Great Team effort that pulled Jonesboro close to victory.

The rules regarding roughing the kicker or holder on scrimmage kicks or PATs are very specific. Most fans believe when a kick is blocked there can be no foul for roughing. Not true. The intent of the rule is to protect two defenseless players from potential serious injury. By rule, only the player who blocked the kick can legally run into or rough the kicker/holder. I do not know the scenario in last night's event, but if a player other the player who blocked the kick contacted the kicker or holder then it is a foul.

Here is the complete rule:

Roughing or Running Into Kicker or Holder
ARTICLE 16. a. When it is obvious that a scrimmage kick will be made, no
opponent shall run into or rough the kicker or the holder of a place kick (A.R.
9-1-16-I, III and VI).

1. Roughing is a live-ball personal foul that endangers the kicker or holder.

2. Running into the kicker or holder is a live-ball foul that occurs when the
kicker or holder is displaced from his kicking or holding position but is
not roughed (A.R. 9-1-16-II). Note: “Running into carries a five-yard
penalty at the previous spot.
FR-92 Rule 9 / ConduCT oF PlayeRs and oTheRs suBJeCT To The Rules

3. Incidental contact with a kicker or holder is not a foul.

4. The kicker’s protection under this rule ends (a)when he has had a
reasonable time to regain his balance(A.R. 9-1-16-IV); or (b)when he
carries the ball outside the tackle box (Rule 2-34) before kicking.

5. When a defensive player’s contact against the kicker or holder is caused
by an opponent’s block (legal or illegal), there is no foul for running into
or roughing.

6. A player who makes contact with the kicker or holder after touching the
kick is not charged with running into or roughing the kicker.

7. When a player other than one who blocks a scrimmage kick runs into or
roughs the kicker or holder, it is a foul
.

8. When in question whether the foul is running into or roughing, the foul
is roughing.
b. A kicker or holder simulating being roughed or run into by a defensive
player commits an unsportsmanlike act (A.R. 9-1-16-V).
