So we're getting started with the pick 'em a week ahead this year, just so folks can start getting into the swing early. I'd planned on making big changes to the pick 'em this year, but that didn't pan out. Mostly because I never really settled on what I'd like to do, but also because I was so busy working on other things that I just left myself short on time to make any major changes to the underlying structure.
That said, one small change I made was to not require a spread on every game. Now for almost all games, you simply need to pick a winner. There are only six games where a spread is needed. This week it's simply taking the top six games where the teams playing have the lowest combined rankings. In future weeks I plan to change that so that it's either 1) completely random or 2) the six games with the lowest predicted spread by The Toy.
