2022 UPSETS

6-Man King

Six-man pro
Not surprised Silverton got beat last night, they were 45 point favored. Injuries and sickness has already begun, was it a factor last night I don't know, but I have not been impressed with them all year.

Last night, just like most nights when there's a huge upset, I sat down and looked at the rankings for Silverton and Groom to see if I could figure out what happened. Did The Toy get it wrong and, if so, what could have been tweaked to correct it? In this case, like most cases actually, I couldn't find any issues with where the teams were ranked coming into the game.

Silverton has 45'd every team they've played except for Paducah, Whitharral and Jayton. All those teams are in the top 30, and they played them all pretty close games, actually beating Whitharral who is #18. There could be an argument that some, or all, of those teams are ranked too high but having Silverton at #22 after beating #18 and losing to #26 and #27 in very close games doesn't seem absurd to me.

Next I looked at Groom. They have losses to #76, #77 and #97. Their game with Miami (#97) was a very close game. They barely lost and that was the worst team that has beat them. So, I'd assume they'd be somewhere in that range. Their best win, prior to this week, was to Claude (#116), and that also was a fairly close game. So, somewhere between #97 and #116 just makes sense, at least to me. They were ranked #103 going into this week. Again, you could make the argument that those teams are ranked too low but going based solely on where the opponents were ranked, I think Groom was correctly placed too.

So, in my opinion, both teams were ranked exactly where they needed to be. I mean, obviously not, but going based solely on where their opponents are ranked, and the outcome of all their previous games, I don't think The Toy was too far off the mark. I do have more to add, regarding The Toy and human influence in the rankings, but I think I'll add it in another topic from last season early next week.

What I think a lot of people fail to realize is that upsets can come out of nowhere (on paper) but there are almost always extenuating circumstances involved, injuries, suspensions, grades, any variety of things that can take a roster that was initially superior to an opponent and level the playing field. That doesn't mean the rankings were actually in error but that no computer can know beforehand that these circumstances exist. There's no way you, or anyone else can have knowledge of these things in advance. They have to play themselves out. Additionally, there are also times when team A loses to team B during the regular season with team A ranked higher. everyone calls it an upset and calls the "toy" into question. They meet in the playoffs and team A bets team B by a sizeable margin. What no one (except the local folks) realized was team A had a few players out for whatever reason for the first matchup. Because team B won the initial game its fans are upset because team A continued to be ranked higher because the loss didn't affect their ranking enough for team B to surpass them in ranking points. Ultimately the "toy" was proven to be right at the end. I've seen this scenario play out several times over the years. I'm just happy that you've continued the site because i think it's important to the game. Rankings are fun. They shouldn't be taken as gospel. They are an estimation of reality, not reality. Anyone who expects perfection in any ranking system has obviously not watched the NCAA try to get it right for many many years. I'd guess the "toy" has been far more accurate over the years than the BCS.

I think the ranking system is done properly pretty darn close most of time, but I kinda saw this coming, I was wrong though with cherokee game last week, to me Groom would win that district, but as I've said in earlier posts weather, sickness, injuries will plague good teams. That's we're depth comes to play. Do you take the hard schedule or play it safe till playoffs?

They’re a handful of plays from being undefeated. Solid team, just got to capitalize on other’s mistakes. They’ll be fine
