He throws the ball well and as I say, when you are an official you had better put your whistle in your pocket, because he is a magician. They hope he will play hoop in college, but I think he had a better shot at QB. There are a lot of 6'5 guards at the collegiate level who are more athletic and faster. But time will tell.

Got a question. Yesterday (Friday), work required me to spend the day outside Cabela's in Buda. Is there some UIL rule that requires every school/coach who attends the UIL Boys Basketball playoffs to drive their bus or school district provided vehicle to Cabela's during the tournament?

I must have seen 20 such vehicles (buses from Tenaha, Bastrop, and at least one or two others) as well as a collection of small vans/SUV's with school district logos.

It is probably the subsection which causes some folks to go to coaching school and park school vehicles at strip clubs and take off to casinos in Louisiana in same said vehicles. Ha

UIL boys: Paducah 45 Bronte 30

Nobody was bigger in the Class A, Division II championship game than a 5-foot-8-inch guard from Paducah.

Andrew Hastings nailed six three-pointers and Paducah won its first title since 1988 with a 45-30 victory over Bronte. Hastings, a senior who is tied with classmate Bobby Evans as the shortest person on Paducah’s roster, finished with 19 points had half of Paducah’s points through three quarters.

After scoring 67 points against Waelder on Friday, Paducah struggled early against Bronte and the Dragons missed their first 14 shots on Saturday night. But a Bronte team that shot 70.5 percent from the field in its state semifinal victory over Roxton was unable to take advantage of the Dragons’ early struggles and the Paducah took a slim 17-15 lead into halftime.

Hastings and senior Garrett Thompson each hit two three-pointers after the intermission and Paducah extend its lead to 14 points by the end of the third quarter. Bronte did not get any closer than 11 points in the final frame.

Lonnie Hurd added 10 points and 12 rebounds for Paducah (29-6) while Thompson and AJ Cantrell each had six points.

A 66-60 loser to Cayuga in last year’s Class A, Division I championship game, Bronte was led by Dakota Rawls’ 13 points. The Longhorns finish the season with a 33-4 record.

The Dragons were too big, too athletic, and were under control. This game was not really even as close as the score. But congrats to both teams for making it to finals.

The game was televised on Dish last night. Bronte had no answer for the 3-pointers, as they were too busy triple teaming the post.

Pretty good haul for the western half of the state this year. Smyer girls, Canyon girls, Idalou boys, and Paducah boys all won state.
