From a small article in the 10/21/1931 San Antonio Express....

STATESVILLE. N. C.,. Oct. 30,—Ray
Perdue, 24. Statesville High School coach, was fatally injured today at
Taylorvllle in a fight with Garfield Jennings of Taylorvllle, head-lineman
for a football game between Taylorvllle and Perdue's team.
Perdue died while being brought to a hospital here. Jennings, 22, was held
on $15,000 bond pending a hearing.

Near the close of the game's first half Coach Perdue stepped to the side
lines and protested a decision to the referee Jennings, witnesses said,
struck him in the face with his fist and he dropped unconscious.

Medical aid was given at once, but he died of concussion.

Moral of the Story - don't mess with refs in the old days, they'll kill you......

And the refs residing in the town where the game is being played is a bad combination.
