Windows 8

Anybody else have this atrocity of an OS?

I downloaded a tweak program, but that can only do so much to hide the level of oral suction created by the mere existence of Win8. It was designed to turn your computer into a freaking cell phone. I don't want to swipe on a 17 inch monitor.

When will they offer a decent commercial tax prep software on the mac?

Rant over....for a few minutes.

Oh - andwhy does thespacebar only work about half the time on Toshiba laptops? IloveMondays.

I have it and I think if I ever figure out how it works I may like it. It only took me two days fir figure out how to shur it down. My 5 year old grand baby is teaching me how to use it, so I have hope.

thats all you could get on the computer? I am stupid? I do not fell worthy of something better? I do not know anything about any of them!!!!!

I am a mac guy. There is one huge reason and two sub-reasons why I must endure windows, or anything else from Microsoft.

Huge Reason: I like being self employed.

Sub-reason 1: I know of no decent tax prep software that will run on either Linux or Mac. I can't afford any beta junk or feel-good open-source software.

Sub-reason 2: As bad as I hate to admit it, Excel is the best spreadsheet application on the market and I've been using it for 17 years. the mac ms-office version stinks, as does apple's "Numbers".

I've tried OpenOffice but it's not that good either.

I will say, though, that win7 was tolerable.

I have only one question regarding win 8..............
WHY????
The question was intended for Microsoft................... Why do they insist on cramming this junk down our throats?

MS is wanting to move us in the direction of eventually using the CLOUD. They made to big of a move here, it was to much of a change at one time.

I helped beta test Win 8, no, that does not make me great, anyone can beta test for them and no, you do not get paid. LOL I did not like it from the start. I think it was to much in one step.

I love Win 7 and I am back to running it on all of my systems. I have had people call me after they buy a new system and I tell them to take it back and get a Win 7 system...I can still get them in Laptops and can build a desktop with it in them.

Windows 8 is pretty good if you have gone touch screen, most of us have not made that change yet.

I tired to use a Linux on a server and ended up having to go to Server 2003 to get it to work right. Linux is great but there is a learning curve...a big one is some cases.

We are stuck with MS and not a whole lot we can really do about it. I do use Chrome instead of IE but I have had to stick with office, open office just is not as slick. There are a lot of things to like and hate about them...when people do get really upset at them I ask a simple question, "If you owned the company would you do it any different?" Not many can say yes and mean it...as long as we continue to buy it they will continue to make it.

I installed a ui tweak program that returns the win8 interface back to a win7, vista, or XP interface. But even then...

I agree. Too much change too soon with win8. MS has been using the same basic user interface since 1995. I'm sure the kids will adapt with little or no lag. Not me.

I have enough trouble keeping my phone screen clean, and it's only what - 3.5" or so? I can only imagine the stomach-turning mess my greasy sausage fingers would create on a 21" display.

I have no issues with Cloud.....think it's great.
I just don't see 8 as a business OS...... Use it in a network setting and let me know what you think....
As for linux, I think you will see more "friendly" apps in the future....

I think until Linux can shed itself of the uber-geek, free to all, feel-good reputation that open source software tends to have among the masses, it will never become a commercially viable operating system. Red Hat tried to brand Linux several years ago, but it never took off.

Android OS was was created well after Linux, but has caught and well surpassed anything Linux wanted to become with respect to end-user, private citizen popularity.

Linux's greatest weakness is also it's greatest strength: It's open source.

Did you format your hard drive and install it, or did you put the peppermint in a partition?

I have parallels on and old mac, and was wondering if I could use it to partition some space for peppermint while keeping the old mac OSX and choosing which OS I want to boot up.

I put a new hdd in. 2 gb ram. ended up putting a new usb wireless nic in.OS loaded in about 15 minutes. I am able to access all my other systems on the network. Still haven't got the HP 3600 printer installed but it picked up an Epson AIO immediately.
I don't think you'll have a problem with the partitions but if you wanted to and if the bios supports booting from USB, install on
a flash drive and boot from that.
The whole OS is only 512mb...............

I read where the OS is only 512MB. But I read all the way through the user guide and the gist I got was that you needed to create a partition at the very least - especially if you are going to install peppermint on a mac.

IDK. May be easier just to build a dedicated machine from the oodles of spare parts in my PC junkyard/graveyard.
