White Deer

That's where OBK is spot on about 8-man. Still allows those with "big ol' boys" to play an 11 man style game with fewer numbers. It took a few years for me to realize this - I left Colorado as an 8-man hater - but after my short experience in Anton, 8-man would be a viable option for many schools with declining enrollment in Texas.

@ oneday... I wouldn't say wheeler was unsuccessful. 20-4 ( 2 of those losses were to valley. The years they were state runner up) Wheeler did use 3 big ol boys on the o line who were dang good athletes as well.. But also had a lightening package for the o line as well.. What kept us from going further in tye playoffs were #1 meeting up with talented teams and coaches in early rounds and #2 playing full padded 11man football from 4th grade on and being programed to 1 style. Football is still football but techniques change from 6 man to 11 man... Wheeler also was a weird case.... Steadily declining enrollment for 5 straight years, playing 11man in 2003 season with 16-18 kids. The vote comes to move up to sixman and we dive in full speed. In 2 years after gaining confidence and becoming hungrier to chase a state title enrollment comes in 3 people over, the oil boom had begun and enrollment has grown now for sometime now. My point in all of this being big boys can play 6man it just takes the right program and system.

Thanks Coach! I knew Wheeler did better than the person within the Gorman school system was trying to make it out with his comment...I just didn't want to argue the point with him at the time and even if it wasn't 100% for Wheeler it was an argument that could hold water for other schools and I had never really considered it.

All I really remembered about Wheeler was that they were really good in 1A when I was in high school 1996-00 and went six-man shortly there after so expectations that they would be a State contender was high..20-4 was a great record in 2 seasons...I wish I had known that in the moment I was having the conversation with Gorman man.

Thanks for sharing with us all the rest of the story!
