Unpopular Opinion (subjective calls)

There is a college and nfl DB celebration that mimics buckling a seatbelt when they’ve defended a pass. It’s never flagged, it’s not excessive. However, a senior was disqualified from a playoff contest yesterday for doing the same move.

At what point do we pull the power of subjective calls being able to eject players.

Targeting I get it, fighting sure, any threatening actions or language towards officials or coaches.. yes..

But buckling a freaking seatbelt (and other celebrations) is not something you disqualify these kids for. Give them 15 yards or whatever.. I’ll die on this hill

I think the move represents drawing a sword (like a gladiator) as opposed to bucking a seatbelt. It’s an unsportsmanlike penalty and is nothing new at the high school level. Was there a previous warning?

He received his FIRST unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for standing over another player pointing at him jeering at him. He received his SECOND unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for doing the same thing with the nfl celebration. It was a good lesson in HUMILITY and THAT is the takeaway that should be impressed upon him by his elders, not looking for ways to blame the officials or to misrepresent the facts.

Figured there was more to the story lol

Again… flag him all day.. it’s not worth an ejection for ANY player. Parents and coaches crying to the refs to make that call because your team couldn’t stop him was as big a unsportsmanlike move as anything he did. It’s a bad rule

Sounded like he had already received one. At that point should you just not quit acting out and play football??? Confused I guess, so was it everyone else’s fault but his own?? What game was it

So you agree he had already received one unsportsmanlike penalty for what is considered taunting in the nfl, then he did the move and the ref gave him his second which disqualified him and had him removed? You agree that is how it went down?

Is a player only allowed two unsportsmanlike penalties in a game before they are disqualified?

I’m not saying he didn’t receive or earn the penalties.. I’m saying that “taunting” shouldn’t be an offense worth ejection. I’ve seen multiple athletes do the exact same thing and it not get called. It’s a subjective call, therefore I don’t agree with that aspect of it.

It literally changed the outcome of what was a great game up to that point.

Tied 46-46 at halftime. San Marcos hill country came out with the adjustments and went up 70-46… and their best player gets ejected for buckling a seatbelt.

And no, I’m not a parent or a coach of either program

It sounds like he didn’t get ejected for taunting he got ejected for getting 2 unsportsmanlike conduct fouls which is a automatic ejection. Also he would have to sit out the first half of the next game.

Nailed it

Again, respectfully, I understand what was called. I’m saying it’s a subjective call, an inconsistent call, and therefore shouldn’t be an ejection. I’m saying I know it’s a rule, but I believe it’s a bad rule

Here's an unpopular opinion for your. Maybe teach your kids that there's a way to lose and a way to win and they don't need to be a bunch of showboats.

Sounds like he needs to stop doing things to show up the other team.. probably doesn’t get a flag if he celebrates WITH his teammates instead of AGAINST his opponents

So it sounds like you are saying he’s been doing this all year and most of the time he doesn’t get called for it. Being in the playoffs he runs into a more experienced ref crew and they call him for it twice before halftime. After the first penalty his coach should have pulled him aside and made it clear no more taunting of any kind. Just go out and play football this isn’t one act play.

As much as I disagree with zebras I will say all calls are somewhat subjective refs aren’t going to see everything done every play. But on the flip side if you get a unsportsmanlike conduct foul due to taunting you have just elevated the attention you are going to get from a ref looking for other infractions so once you get your first that is basically your warning you are on thin ice. At that point it’s time to settle down and just play the game, if he was that blatant about his taunting I’m surprised that this is his first ejection being a senior. You can dislike the rules but as long as they are in place that is how the games will be called there will always be human error and bad or questionable calls it’s human nature. If you don’t like the rule petition the uil or whoever is the governing body to change them that’s all that can be done but trust me you don’t want to open the Pandora’s box of allowing taunting and excessive celebration to go unchecked the game would devolve into some bad ways.
