Thinning the Herd (A Salute to the Fallen)

As the weaker teams fall off, and the elite tread on, I would just like to take a minute to tell all teams who played, especially the seniors who will never suit up again, you are some of Texas' finest. For those of you who barely missed playoffs, hold your heads high. For those who had a losing season, do not be ashamed. And for those of you who were eliminated last week, thank you for your service to six man. Now you are gone. You won't play anymore. The long practices, the grueling two a days, the fun times, they are in the past. And we pray ALL of you go on to a bright future and represent your six man community well. And now, as you fade, you never completely go. The Freshman will always remember you as their leaders. And your locker will always seem like home. In the school hallways, ghosts of the past will creep up when you enter, and you will see flashes of old banners and hand painted signs, golden trophies, and old pals. Yes, you are done playing football. But, football will always be a part of you. The lights will beckon you back, but you are restrained from stepping on the field. But in time, you will learn to simply watch and enjoy. Congrats on your last season, and know that you are always a member of the Six Man community.

Just had my first grandson play his final game last week. Went into my old highschool for the pep ally, and brought back memories.

Feel the tingles up and down my back just like before a game it has been a while since I have heard someone put down into words as you have and even longer since I felt the tingle in my hands as we prepared to play.
my hats off grand dad you did well!
better words may have never spoken
thank you for sharing

ps as the due date of my first grandson is less than a month away it hits me very hard

Well said Madness. Definitely feel that way when I go to the school even though my old high school is gone. I still get that feeling. My youngest son will play his senior year next year. Just a little bitter sweet. Got my first Grandbaby coming in February. Will have to be on the cheer squad though cause they don't let little girls play football yet.

it was hard for me to explain to my daughter that she couldn't play,,, how does a dad explain to his angel there is anything in this world that she cant when from birth you have told her to reach for the stars work hard and you can succeed at anything... she fought with her brother all her life she didn't much care if 5'9" 145 did match up well with him at 6'2" 285..
I thank God each day for those kidos they have grown up with me I look at the school pictures we saved from the fire hmmm dad wasn't to good with the curling iron, bows weren't always straight wished I had been able to do a better job

my first grandbaby will be here in a few weeks Bentley Cole Wrinkle hope to be around to see him strap on the pads, it was hard to see his dad walk off that field the last time a year ago

My grand daughter actually played pee wee. She tried to play Jr. High, but she had to change in a different locker room and she was tough, but its just how life works. She was weaker then the boys after 7th grade, and after some big eighth grade boys from Crowell hit her when she ran, she retired haha. But, was glad she tried.

got to love country girls!! tough as nails and still bring a tear to dad's eye as they grow up and prepare to step out there on their own..
wish them all better than the best !!
