Teams that could play 6man but choose not to?

Panhandle wise, I see Texline, Hartley, Adrian, Kelton, Fort Elliot with higher enrollments than a lot of D2 schools that do play. Why would these teams not play, especially Fort Elliot since they have played before? I get that they are used to just being basketball schools, however it would help out the teams in that area with scheduling and districts. Particularly Boys Ranch with Hartley and Texline showing d1 numbers. Just curious why its not even considered?

Our entire basketball district is the same way. Every school would be considered D1, except Avinger. None of them have ever considered. We tend to ask every year, but always the same answer.

Could be cost? When I was at Spur we played one year at Ft. Elliott - can't speak for them, but they tend to fluctuate in numbers if I remember correctly. Tough to be competitive when you can't consistently field a team. Just speculation on my part though. I don't think a school district would ever make a decision to play a sport to help other districts with scheduling, etc. To each their own, and no football has been good for Texline in basketball.

Being from Miami, Fort Elliot was always competitive. Their enrollment is higher now than I think it was when I was in HS. Numbers do fluctuate, look at Throckmorton and Knox City's. They were playing 11man when I was in HS. Now they have d2 numbers. I should rephrase what I meant by helping out other teams. I meant if they did play football, more teams and they obviously have the numbers to play. I just don't understand the thought process. Its Texas after all and we all know football is king.

FE had 20+ out for basketball this year. I believe 15-16 players on their varsity

As I stated before. I think it is funny that some of these really good basketball only school's fears of it "hurting basketball" are overblown. You cant tell me with the athletes a Texline gets for basketball they wouldn't be competitive.

I think it is taking away opportunities from kids personally.

Places like Fort Elliot who have facilities in place already for football and don't play also don't make a lot of sense to me.

Totally agree. Santo was a basketball only school and was big rivals with Graford and Brock in the 1950's and 1960's. Santo had several great teams over the years, but the Boys basketball never won State until 1990. Santo started their six man football program in 1968 and are currently playing 11-man football. So one could say the football program might have helped the basketball program, may be just a little bit. Brock and Peaster started their football programs many years later and both are currently in the hunt for a state championship. Lipan and Graford are still basketball only and we all know the success both of those programs have enjoyed.

A few months ago, I remember a coach from Laneville saying they were going to start football. He was looking for equipment (if I remember right). Haven’t heard anything since.
