Tapps recruiting violations?

Has anyone else heard about the possible recruiting going on at San Marcos hill country? Just trying to get info on if it’s actually recruiting. They lose a head coach and the new one brings in his little brother and a hand full of his friends from SMA. I’m not sure what the guidelines are on all this, but if this is true, how is this not recruiting?

By rule , I believe the little brother would be able to play but all the rest would have to sit out one season before allowed to play. Or the coach can not coach for one year. Under no following the coach rule. Or whatever it is called.

How come the brother wouldn't have to sit out too? He wouldn't be following the coach too?

From my understanding, He did not coach anyone of them last year, now I could be wrong on that, but would that rule still fall under that category for the brother? since they would have had contact before the transfers?

Are you really trying to prevent a kid from being coached by his older brother who he most likely looked up to his entire life?

If SMA has issues with any of the transfers then they will check the appropriate boxes on the transfer paperwork.

No I am not. I would like all the kids to play. I have no idea what’s happening over at that school. I would venture to guess the rule wouldn’t apply to his little brother, but if recruiting was happening, I’m asking about the rule for that. I don’t think I ever said his brother shouldn’t play, I don’t think that should happen, again I’m asking about rules. Sorry if I made u upset with that comment, I’m new to all this

IMO, nothing described sounds explicitly illegal according to the TAPPS By-Laws (link below)

TAPPS By-Laws

Section 104 - V - A - 1 through 4 seems to not apply. Ill quote below:

A. A student who transfers to a TAPPS member school shall not be eligible for Varsity competition in a sport for a period of one year if:

1. a coach in that sport at the new school coached or trained the student at the previous school during the previous 12 months.
2. a coach in that sport at the new school coached or trained the student on an AAU, select, club, 7 on 7, 6 on 6 or similar team during the previous 12 months.
3. a coach at the new school provided individual or group instruction to the student during the previous 12 months.
4. a coach at the new school provided skills training, fitness training, personal training or other such training to the student during the previous 12 months.

B. EXCEPTION to the rule:
1. Adopted or birth children are eligible if their parent who is the coach changes schools.
2. If the previous school attended by the student and coach has closed, the above rule does not apply.
3. Camps as defined in section 1, hosted by a member school are not subject to this rule.
C. Removal of the coach after the student contact with the school does not provide relief from this section

Section 87 deals with solicitation of students - to quote the section that I believe is relevant

"B. Examples of Unacceptable Solicitation
The unacceptable solicitation of students by school personnel, school volunteers, parents, or any other third party is a violation of TAPPS rules and may result in the loss of the affected student’s eligibility to participate in TAPPS events.
1. School personnel campus visits targeting athletes
2. Mailings to specific athletes or groups of athletes
3. Open House for athletes
4. Tryouts or combines for athletes II. III.
5. Those things that target specific students for their athletic ability
6. Materials that negatively reflect on other TAPPS member schools "

To me, it sounds like a talented kid left one TAPPS school for another, and a number of his athletic teammates wanted to follow him there (purely speculating based off of what has been shared in this thread.) Although this stinks for the opponents in the district, I don't believe it falls under any of the 6 "Unacceptable Solicitations" or is in violation of the transfer guidelines. I don't have enough evidence to know if anything nefarious is going on in this situation, sometimes kids change schools so that they can play sports with their friends.

Anyone remember awhile back, maybe a decade or more ago, the private school/coach that told his HS team he canceled the game against one of the better private school teams? Then he took some college kids and played the HS team and still got whooped. I'd hope that fella isn't coaching anymore!

If the coach from school A moved to school B, and kids that he trained at school A also move to school B, they are ineligible for varsity competition for one year according to TAPPS rules. Case and point is a football player who transferred to Midland Holy Cross from TLCA last year who had to sit out since Coach Stredic had also moved from TLCA to Holy Cross. If you are the parent or legal guardian of the kid, that is an exception to the rule.

We talking bout rules for TAPPS and worrying about it??? Y'all funny, TAPPS aint got no rules for that kind of stuff. They may have it written down somewhere but it aint enforced. Ole Dallas Tyler Street was notorious for recruiting back in the day before they shut down and TAPPS did nothing. Y'all are just beating a dead horse with this thread.

Ah, yes. I know it well. Between me and Granger, we got the first "news" of the story from a parent of one of the high school players. Coach's son got some of his pals over at Texas State to play the game. Houston Texas Christian. Got lots of publicity, here and nationally. Even had a Sports Illustrated story about it. Gotta be at least 10-15 years back, maybe more.

Great line from the SI story. Seems in the second half, the college boys were getting a bit winded. As the SI writer said something like at some point, the ex- takes over from the ex-players.

Tyler Street was in my district when I played back in day at Duncanville Christway... Coach Favors ran a clean Program! Public Schools came and took alot of his top athletes away after 2009-2010.. Coach Favors didn't care how good an athlete was.. He would sit or bench anyone.. He benched Trevor Martinez in 2009 football Playoffs and off of Basketball team that year as well..

Houston Texas Christian is the school we 45d in Semi Final in 2009.. Looked like college kids lol

I do have a funny story to report about the "history" of Seguin Lifegate and Houston Texas Christian. Back in 2002, I think, we both made the semifinals of the TAPPS 1A basketball tournament in Waco. Lifegate and Texas Christian were playing the first game and we won by four points. The other semifinal was between two since closed schools, Fort Worth Ambassadors and Cleveland Heritage Christian (then coached by Jerome Tang who is now head coach at Kansas State). Anyway, both Ambassadors and Heritage were extremely talented teams and it was a tough ball game with Heritage winning.

After that game, I was in the lobby and one of the Ambassadors parents remarked that they were better than those "two silly white boy schools" that played the first game. I politely mentioned that I was from one of those schools and I appreciated that we got the draw that we did and I agreed with him. And both of us laughed and patted each other on the back.

We ended up losing to Heritage ... everybody thought it would be a blowout, we actually had them within 9 early in the fourth quarter and lost by 13-16. Heritage was beating schools 150-15 that year; had a kid who scored 100 in a game (I think he ended up playing in the NBA for a short time).

The kids who left TLCA and came to Holy Cross did not come to Holy Cross because of me. I'm not all that. They came because TLCA did not hire a coach until the first day of two a days. They just wanted to play football their senior year, but were not able to play because a coach in my district reported 'following the coach'. We lived with it, but very disappointed the seniors were not able to play their senior year.
