TAPPS D2 Finals

Six-man pro
Fredericksburg Heritage 36
Fort Worth Glenview Christian 30
in 1 OT

... will write more later, but my friend Robert Davis is right; the kicking game was the difference ... Heritage hit 3 pat's of 5; Glenview missed 4 kicks and one on the ground (from the 18 due to a 15 yard celebration penalty) ... Heritage nearly won in regulation, coming close to a safety on the last play of regulation.

Why are you "shocked"? :? Fredericksburg won 30-somethin straight until last year. Glenview won State last year, but up until then it was Fredericksburg, Fredericksburg, Fredericksburg. I kind of figured they would pull out in the end...

Just like everyone (including myself) was too quick to crown Rockwall Heritage DI champs, I think the same goes for Glenview in DII. Congrats to Robert Ramsey and the Freddy seniors!

WOW!!! What an AMAZING GAME!!! I'm sure that anyone watching or participating in the game would find few negatives about either team to say. I am confident that this game glorified our God in every way. The teams were very evenly matched in skill, determination, mutual respect for one another, and sportsmanship. And the fans - OMG - I was so blessed by the Freddy fans honoring our boys after the game by chanting "Glenview Cowboys" over and over. Thank you for that! You guys are a class act! Other than the All Star game next week, this was my sons final high school football game. The sweetest ending would, of course, would have been to take home the trophy again, but he could not have wished for a more intense or exciting game to go out on! Congratulations Fredericksburg - 2007 State Champions! And to the Glenview Cowboys - You guys are AWESOME!!! You have played this season with much honor and dignity and I am so proud of all of you and your accomplishments!! And a BIG thank you to our coaches for giving up many hours with your own families to the benefit of our Glenview family. We are so grateful to you!!

Now on to All Stars!!! GO NORTH!!! :D

Wow, what a game! As far as great finishes in championship games in six-man that I've seen in person, this for me ranks up there with Panther Creek/Highland in 2000 and Gordon/Whitharral in 1996. (Granger may need to research this but it may be the first UIL or TAPPS six-man championship to go into OT.) The kids from Heritage and Glenview made huge plays on both sides of the ball from start to finish in a very physical game, and the coaches from both sides made gutsy decisions when the game was on the line to go for the win. The kids and fans from both schools will be talking about this one for a long time.

MOODY — It took an overtime period, but Fredericksburg Heritage is the state champion once again in TAPPS Division II six-man football.

Ethan Beall tossed a 5-yard TD pass to Kirk Kroeger in overtime Saturday as the Eagles beat defending champion Fort Worth Glenview 36-30.

Heritage, which won consecutive titles in 2004 and 2005, didn't clinch the 2007 crown until Luke Andrews intercepted a Jesse Mills pass in the end zone during overtime.

Beall also connected with Kroeger on a 34-yard TD pass in the second quarter. Robert Ramsay added 9- and 7-yard TD runs and Kroeger had a 7-yard TD run in the third quarter for the Eagles (13-0).

Mills tossed a 24-yard TD pass to Shawn Rivera in the first quarter and found him again for a 23-yard scoring pass in the second quarter for Glenview (12-2). Taylor Gentry scored three times on runs of 33, 2 and 23 yards.

First, it was a great game ... back and forth. You could never figure out if either team was getting an edge ... the template on how a state title game should be played, from the fan's perspective (our coaches on line would probably prefer being on the higher end of a blowout).

As I've mentioned here before, our friend Robert Davis had it right ... the game came down to the kicking game. Both teams scored six touchdowns, but Heritage converted 3 of 6 extra points, Glenview 0 of 6.

Let me apologize for this sounding like a Glenview woulda-shoulda-coulda. If they won, I'm guessing I could have written a Heritage version -- for example, at least three turnovers and putting the ball on the rug more times than I was used to seeing. Fortunately for Heritage, only the first turnover cost them points.

1. There was a time in the first half when Glenview needed a punt; they went for it on 4th and long deep in their territory. Heck, from my experience with Heritage, starting them on their own 4 is too deep in my territory to stop them.

We joke in our district meeting that punter is at least the only position Heritage can't put up anyone since they never punted in district, but a team always needs a punter.

2. A key penalty was the celebration penalty on the touchdown where Glenview tied the game at 30 in the fourth. Heritage wisely took the penalty on the PAT and it meant that they had to try for one from the 18(which was a good choice; I think if I had the ball at the 3, I'd have gone for one ... already missed 5 kicks and a point is the lead).

3. Glenview dodged a bullet on the last play of regulation. They had stopped Heritage on the 7 yard line with about 5 seconds left and decided to go for the Hail Mary ... the Glenview QB spent a lot of time in their end zone and if a ref had blown a quick whistle, could have been called sacked for a safety (excellent non-call, by the way). I know you coaches tell your QB to stay out of the endzone, but since when do kids listen. Woud have been an interesting -- and controversial -- way to end a state title game on a safety.

But that's how championship games fall ... on little mistakes and being able to capitalize on them.

What a game ... probably the best game of the weekend!

Congrats to both teams ... on great seasons!

Let's take it easy here John...there is no reason to question the calls on one team's coaches' behalf when the game was this close. Fredericksburg had their miscues as well, and in the end both sides gave equal heart and one team simply had to lose.

The fact is, both coaching staffs and schools behaved with class and gave it their best. In the end, one team had to win that game...one had to lose. Hats of to Shipman. Hats of to Earhart and all of the coaches and players...

What a game! Congratulations Fredricksburg!! Congratulations Glenview!! To all the Glenview Seniors. We couldn't be more proud of you. Keep your heads up. As stated above, BOTH teams, coaching staffs, fans, etc. demonstrated class throughout the whole game. As the old saying goes, It's a shame somebody had to lose. That's life, and a lesson to be learned. Again, congratulations to both teams.

I went to the game Saturday. I listened to people in the concession area during halftime talking about how Glenview had the game in hand as though Heritage was no competition. I have been watching Heritage for several years now. Their program is top notch and for a fan not to show a little respect for it shows a lack of knowledge of the game. Glenview has an excellent program. Their defense is good versus both run and pass. The kicking game however has its share of issues. Congratulations to both Heritage and Glenview for excellent seasons. Good luck to Glenview next year.

No disrespect was meant to my friends at Glenview. My guess is that they probably were more criticial on the woulda-shoula-couldas as well. But it was a great season for the Cowboys ... but knowing Coach Harris and Coach Erhardt and that team, their goal was a repeat title (especially if the rumors that they will go to Crowded Field Football [aka "11-man"] in 2008 are true).

It was a great game, a chess match from both sidelines -- probably more entertaining in the stands than in the heat of battle on the sidelines and the playing field.

In the end, the difference was the kicking game and if Glenview had a better kicking game, the result would have been much different. A lot of us learn that we don't have a solid kicking game and end up 3-7. But in big games, small differences are the differences between a championship and second place.

Congrats to both Heritage and Glenview for a great game!

John T.

PS ... The stat guys were awfully nicer to Heritage than I would have been. I think they had at least 5-6 fumbles (losing one), including where Ramsey put the rock on the grass on 4th down in regulation; the stat guys show them with two.

It seems that most people feel (or believe) that Glenview lost the game as opposed to Heritage winning the game. I have been following heritage football for several years now and can say that their program is top notch.
I understand that it is difficult to compare teams on the basis of common opponents as the schedules very rarely allow for more than maybe one. The quality of analysis is dependent upon the data you choose. I use the word choose because I don't think that many of the people who comment here make an effort to compare apples to apples. Making such blanket statements as having a good defense or having a good offense is insufficient unless the basis for making that statement is sound and explained.
I explained to a person attending the game that the Heritage running attack would improve in the second half (it did) and that although Heritage had not gained a great deal of momentum in the first half it would improve in the second. This was not based on some feeling but rather on the performances in similar game settings. I grant you that Heritage had not faced as high a quality opponent as Glenview previously but they had been in a couple of long games. It was my experience that the ground attack eventually wore opponents down and although more disciplined I expected that Glenview would be no diffferent.
Each team has a kicking game. It is one third of the game in terms of team formation. For a kicking game to be poor is not an excuse but an issue to be resolved before a championship game. My congratulations to bothj Glenview and Heritage for great seasons and Good Luck to Glenview in their move up to Div I. Heritage will be back next year for the non-believer to watch once again.

Jonel ... In case you haven't heard, Glenview is moving to 11-man football in 2008, so the Heritage game was probably their last 6-man game.

The lack of a kicking game was the difference that day. At the level Glenview (and Heritage played), it was an achillies heel that Glenview could compensate for in other games ... just keep scoring. But that December day, it was back-and-forth, stop'em and stop'em back, day that basically swapped touchdowns most of the afternoon.

Each team scored six touchdowns ... it was those three kicks ... and a celebration penalty that put Glenview on the 18 for a PAT conversion that cost the game.

But a great game to watch!

John
