Strawn vs Oakwood

Over at half or early in the third. Strawn wins.

Prior to the Friday’s games all the teams in D2 would have been extremely competitive (Strawn excluded). Strawn is multiple levels above everyone else. Iredell was the greatest threat to Strawn. Strawn wins back to back state titles relatively easily this yr.

I wouldn’t be 100% sure on that. I’ve seen Oakwood play a few times including last week. Oakwood’s starting offense is as good as anyone’s including Strawn. They have two absolute beasts running and throwing it and have fast kids everywhere. They don’t have the depth, but I bet you anything it’s a game for a while.

I was at the Oakwood game too and I agree with your assessment of their talent and speed. Number 1 is pretty awesome. Having said that, my confusion, and that of the people I was with, is what happened in the second quarter to make them change both their offensive and defensive schemes? Leading 26-6 they inexplicably seemed to change both and ended up going in at halftime 32 - 26 when they should have been getting ready to go home with a 45. No offense to Richland Springs, with 4 starters out and mostly freshman and sophomores on the field, especially number 4, they made it a heck of a good game. In the 3rd and 4 th quarters there were a few times Oakwood exhibited only a few of the flashes of the brilliance of the first quarter. Oakwood looked tired and sluggish, frustrated and a bit confused. In the end they won but the dominating performance of the first quarter never returned.
If they perform against Strawn in this manner it will be a Strawn rout.
Best wishes and prayers for all the players for an injury free game.

Oakwood did dominate that first then they looked gassed, probably because they haven’t played a four quarter or even three quarter game in a long time. Not sure about the scheme. They looked the same offensively to me, but they fumbled once and lost an onside kick and then boom it’s a game again. But defensively they stopped the run and knocked the running back out, then couldn’t defend the pass. You’re right, they better be ready this week, they can’t afford any mistakes.

I watched Oakwood play Milford and I watched Strawn play Milford so here’s my take. Oakwood can very well play with strawn, they are fassssttt and they will come up and hit. #1 may be the hardest hitter I’ve seen in the 1A level. My only concern with Oakwood is there depth, when they played Milford their starting 6 played awesome, then they had one player get hurt and another get ejected and they weren’t the same team. If Oakwood comes to play and all 6 have the stamina to bang with strawn all game it’s sure gonna be a good ball game.

Oh man. Strawn is strawn. They’ve been there and done that, Oakwood hasn’t. Oakwood has to play mistake free ball and force strawn to make mistakes if they want to win. Strawn is so good they can make a few mistakes and still have control of the game. If Oakwood plays there best game of the season they’ll give strawn all they can handle and it will come down to the wire. Strawns depth might be the difference.

Oakwood started the season out by 45ing Strawn's JV. They were then beat by Milford who Strawn beat twice in the last year, and Calvert, 45'd by Union Hill. They've since had a pretty easy schedule but did 45 Blanket and beat RS by 10. Could be time for payback from all those seniors on behalf of the freshmen and sophomores, they might even give them time to play. They were once freshmen and sophomores too and remember being bounced out of the playoffs by Crowell. Rock and Roll Hounds.

Oakwood dropped those games early for that reason, they were missing kids and have no depth. 1 is a beast, the transfer 7 is too, and 22 might be the fastest kid in 1a. But take just one of those away and they aren’t the same team at all. By the way if it’s raining, what does that do to both teams?

You are right, no. 1 is a good athlete, strong and powerful with great moves and a good sense of where the defense is moving on the field, excellent cut back ability. Overall very good running back. I recommended him to a college head coach I spoke with this weekend. Told him that kid would be worth keeping an eye on.

If I were guessing, I would say that #1 will be transferring to one of the adjacent 11 man schools for next year. I doubt that he can afford to stay for his senior year.

Oakwood has lost a few but that has a lot to do with injuries and stuff going on with the team that's resolved now. They are finally pulling it all together. Oakwood is picked to lose by 45. Last week was 31 I believe. Milford is right about depth but I take oakwoods best six over strawns best six. I think whoever kicks better wins it and it will be high scoring. Oakwood has played one of toughest schedules and never scored less than 36. Hate I can't make it. Any way to watch it live?
