Strawn, Milford opening seasons in Montana

Hey y'all, I'm a reporter in Billings, Montana who broke the story here (paywall) on Strawn/Milford going up to Montana to play two Montana 6-Man squads Aug. 31 at Rocky Mountain College in Billings. Thought you guys on this forum would want to know ... I covered 6-Man pretty heavily last year in Montana and am looking forward to seeing this go down in a couple of months.

Dewaine Lee and Jose Cervantes are great guys, and it's going to be fascinating to see how Texas and Montana 6-Man compare.

Already booked flights and Hotel. History is being made and I want to be a part of it. Im excited to see what the day brings to commemorate such an event.

Should see some great games. I don’t know how Strawn/Milford compare, but Custer-Hysham-Melstone made semifinals last season. Highwood was down, but it’s Montana’s most successful 6-Man program in history (12 titles).

Eastern Montana and Billings is a gem. Check out Little Bighorn battlefield, the many museums and of course Yellowstone if you get a chance. :)

Flying in Friday night after work and flying back Sunday morning and will be home just in time for lunch. Will take the time after everything is done Saturday to find out the best place to go eat and best site to go see before it’s time to go back to Hotel. Going in completely blind so any input from anyone would be greatly appreciated and surely would help others that are also making the journey.

Rocky is pretty centrally located in Billings, sort of near downtown. I would definitely drive up to the top of the Rimrocks for a pretty stunning view of the city.

Yellowstone Art Museum and Yellowstone County Museum are both worth the stop. For food, Jake’s downtown makes a great steak, and 406 Taproom is another favorite sort of near Rocky. Tons of breweries if that’s your forte, too.

Odds are it’ll be pretty hot, so grab a yellow cake shake from Big Dipper Ice Cream, as well.

Do Not try to hug those cute Bisons or Buffaloes.

What rules are different between Montana and Texas?
Two big ones between NFHS and TXHS are offside and low blocking. NFHS is an automatic dead ball foul if the defense jumps into the neutral zone. They don’t have a chance to get back and the offense can’t get a free play. Also, NFHS is even stricter on low blocks than TX. Only linemen are allowed to block low and only immediately at the snap. Backs cannot block low at all.

There are also a couple differences in the kicking game. The biggest difference would show up on kickoffs if the teams kick deep. Any kick that goes into the end zone is dead and is a touchback. It doesn’t matter if the kick was touched or if the ball hits the ground. As soon as the ball breaks the plane of the goal line, it’s a touchback. Another kicking difference is that field goals are essentially just punts that can score in NFHS. So if a field goal is missed (or blocked), it doesn’t come back to the previous spot. If it crosses the goal line, it’s a touchback as above. If it doesn’t, it’s treated with all the same rules as a punt.

I don’t have one of those fancy magazines some of y’all have. Anybody know just what Milford and Strawn bring back on both sides of the ball. Just curious what they’re bringing to Montana.
