I tend to notice visitors before he does. And when he does notice, all he wants is to make friends....

I will say he protects the wife and I from those vicious squirrels and deer........

Yeah, we had one of those protective dogs too. Protected the bed and the couch from being stolen (because he was sleeping on them most of the time); sadly, he was unsuccessful in protecting the leftover beef roast in the fridge.
