Well son, track speed is fast speed with no contact.
Some track kids that are fast can be slowed down by contact (meaning those fast track kids can get POW-WOWED in football).

Example,
Why aren't there MORE professional track athletes playing in the NFL.
I tell you why...... because the track athletes don't want to get PLOWED UNDER by NFL Players, it's a different mindsent.

Anyone can run around the track........NOT everyone can take getting hit over and over.

Can you imagine Usain Bolt running a pass patter across the middle and Patrick Willis is there waiting to take his head off.......... My retirement money is on Usain Bolt NOT running that world class 9.58 time when he see's what's coming.......... I call it Tip-toeing through with T-Rex arms

It has been my observation that is kind of hard to win with speed when you are on your back. Lots of other things to take into consideration. But what do I know?

Show me a team that does well in the 4x400 and odds are they will have a decent 6-man football team.

For 11-man, give me a team that does well in the 4x400, the 4x100, the discus and the shot. That will show me that they have speed, stamina, and big boys with good strength.

All of this depends on whether or not those studs on the track even play football.

very good point horns....at 1a/2a level i look at Alto, Mart, Refugio...just to name a few
I don't understand the original post then. Alto, Mart, Refugio, and Cisco all did very well in football.

It all depends on the events. Buckholts will be represented in three events at state - all by the same kid. He couldn't play all six positions at the same time. Speed doesn't always equal wins in football. It helps; but it doesn't solve everything. I will take a kid that runs a 4.8, but can cut on a dime, over a 4.6 kid who has zero lateral movement any day. You can also do a lot with a kid who just can't be tackled by one kid. David Trevino (#25) at Buckholts was very tough to bring down. Got 1,500 yards this season. He runs like a 5.1. Different strokes for different folks.

The Mathis kid from Paducah runs/ran 11.02 100m at Regionals in San Angelo.
He's probably the fastest kid in the 100 going into the 1A Div. II state meet.

He was a darn good football player because of his speed but Paducah lost in the first round to Happy......
It's great to have speed but more is needed...

I'd take ATHLETIC SPEED or TRACK SPEED ANY DAY.....

Is the Mathis kid the #22 runningback? If so, he can flat out fly, and completely juke you out of your shoes, maybe the fastest kid I've witnessed play football

Yes. That would be Oscar. We are very fortunate to have him here in Paducah. He is also a very personable and coachable young man.

When Earl Campbell was running high school track it was 100 yds not 100 meters. Close to a second difference on times. In Texas high school track, we changed from yards to meters in 1979 to 1980.

Point is Earl could run it in pads

And he struck fear not only in defensive backs, but also linebackers and linemen....
Until he was injured, he was as close as I've ever seen to an unstoppable force in the NFL.

Hornkeeper,

Your 4x400 theory is interesting for 6-man. At the TAPPS 2A state meet, 4x400, Dallas Covenant first (3:34.42), Boerne Geneva second (3:34.61). The race was much closer than the state football game. I would say mostly to do with the fact that one DC RB won the 100 and 200 and the other RB won the open 400, not to mention the other 7 or 10 seniors and great coaches. Geneva had no one place in the 100, 200, or 400.

Side note, state meet was awesome. DC won state boys track on last race. They were ahead on points coming in over Muenster Sacred Heart, but coming in to 4x400, Muenster seeded #1, Boerne Geneva #2, DC #4. If they finished how they were seeded, Muenster wins. DC came from third position on final leg to take lead with about 20 feet left in the race.
