South Texas school dropping all athletics

Saw clips from a Supt interview on Fox news early Sunday morning. He claimed the school had to improve state testing to keep the state from closing the school. He saw the move as drastic, but was a last ditch attempt to get their kids to concentrate on acadimics. The move would also save the district about 50,000 in expenses. Currently, the school is about 450,000 in the hole.

It was early and I was half asleep. I think the school is Premont. I had several different thoughts on this on several different levels. What would the UIL rulings be on all of the kids that are going to transfer into a different district for what will obviously be athletic purposes? When a school shuts down everyone is immeadiately eligible at whatever school that they want to enrole in. Would it be the same in this situation?

It seems to me that as many as fifteen kids leaving will more than make up the 50,000 the Supt. thinks he can save in dropping athletics. So in the long run it will cost the school more money than they can save.

Will grades improve without any athletics being in the picture? That, I'm afraid, is very debatable. What do you guys think?

It is Premont, which is southwest of Corpus Christi and down the road from Alice on US 281.

The district has been in pretty bad shape, academically, physically (buildings in bad shape; they've reduced from three school buildings to two) and financially for several years and I think the state was ready to shut them down but gave them one more year to clean things up.

District enrollment is down to something like 570 from nearly 900 in the past years; and their daily attendance rate is something like 88% (state average 96%). Closest districts are in Kingsville, Falfurrias, or Alice ... well, there's also the Saint Gertrudis district, but that's kinda limited to the King Ranch, I believe ... all about 30 miles or so away.

In football, I think you'd call this the Hail Mary play.
