The high school football landscape in South Dakota is on the verge of a major shake-up.

Barring an unprecedented shift, the SDHSAA Board of Directors will vote Thursday to approve the addition of a six-man football classification beginning in 2019-20. It’s the end of a year-and-a-half long process that has quickly evolved since Faith activities director Doug Schauer first proposed the idea last winter as an answer to the dwindling enrollments at many rural high schools.

“The high interest level was a surprise to me,” Schauer said. “I did not think it would move this quickly and that people would have as much interest in it as they seem to have.”

SDHSAA recommends delaying six-man football

It appears that six-man football's return to South Dakota will be delayed for at least two more years.

The SDHSAA announced Tuesday that its executive staff will recommend postponing the addition of the new classification for the 2019-20 season during next Wednesday's Board of Directors meeting.

SDHSAA assistant executive director John Krogstrand said that 43 schools indicated interest in six-man football when surveyed in 2017, and, after the proposal was approved by the Board of Directors last June, over 20 districts had "serious conversations" about joining the new classification. However, "only a handful" of those schools indicated a serious commitment to the six-man route.

"We feel it is best to suspend the addition of a six-man football class for the time being," Krogstrand said, "and continue with our current classification structure and regulations.”
