Like OU, 'Bama is known as a football school, but they are not even trying to build a university their football team could be proud of. That allows them to scrimp on salaries for professors and capital budget on classrooms/labs, leaving more money for the important things, like bringing in a coach to win a national championship.
Amen, brother. Spurrier, Meyer, and now, Saban (again.) The SEC is just stacked with high profile coaches.

YAAYUS!!<P>Let those hoity-toity sissy schools like UT, Stanford, and MIT do research into fusion power, deep space astronomy, high energy physics. Let those D@&% Aggies and TT boys do agricultural, construction, oceanography, and meteorological research. Who cares if we don't have a good medical/dental school, let those sissies keep those places. Here at 'Bama in particular, and the SEC in general, we're gonna run a college as God meant it to be....a place to see durn good football played by real men who can only read well enough to keep from getting lost on a highway.
I actually heard Terry Bowden talk about how crazy things were in the state of Alabama and what he had to do at Auburn. <P>He said it started towards the end The Bear's career. He used to be escorted by state troopers. Also, any trip over a 1 hour drive was done by private plane. So when Bowden was at Auburn, he had to have at least 2 troopers anywhere he went and had to take the plane because that's what Bama did. Nothing else matters down there. It is Bama and Auburn fb 12 months a year, except for maybe a week off for Talladega.<P>He said he was back in the state this year for the first time since he left (under not so great terms). People stood in line to greet him and get his autograph. He was shocked how well he was received.

When I was applying way back when, the average DAT score there was around a 22 (which is as high it is anywhere else.)
