Just got my Jan. issue and there is an article (linked below) concerning drought issues and how Texas grass field owners are looking at maintenance issues and the idea of syntheic turf.
Oh, and syntheic turf isn't the answer to all your lack-of-water problems. As noted in the article, it was recorded to be 95 in Abilene one day last summer -- but 180 on one of their syntheic turf fields, warmer than on an asphalt parking lot. And what do you think they recommend to cool down turf? That's right, children ... water!
If you're a coach or AD and don't get Athletic Business, you really need to. First, it's free (one of those "trade magazines"), and there always seems to be some great articles on the profession. There's a great one on how AD's can reign in questionable behavior by coaches (you know, the "what were they thinking") type of things; just stuff perhaps we don't always think about, but someday will probably affect us. (You can find a link on the article -- just go to magazine and subscribe; free subscriptions are only available to those in the trade -- AD's and such).
