R.I.P. - Darrell K Royal

Sad day for football everywhere. Condolences to his biological family and that huge extended family of players, coaches, and fans - including me.

Wish I had LHN. Just read his autobiography within the last year. He was truly a down to earth, caring person - about his players, the University and Austin among other things. Very giving of his time for multiple causes.
Read an amusing story in another source just a couple of weeks ago. Texas country singer Johnny Bush's autobiography.
In the early 80's after a show a young couple came up and the lady introduced herself as Norma Strait and husband George. George was just starting to get popular. They went to the bus, talked, agreed to play golf sometime. Some months later George was getting BIG fast but still living in San Marcos. Johnny went by and picked him up and they went to a local course. George went up and said we need a cart and 18 holes. Be about a a 2 hour wait. Johnny said Willies is 45 minutes away and it won't cost us nothing. George said you can do that? Got there, no Willie but 8 people in a foursome (it said this was typical there). Among the 8 Ben Crenshaw and Darrel Royal. Johnny introduces George around. Coach Royal keeps a straight face, doesn't smile or say a word. Reaches in his pants pocket for his keys and throws them at Strait finally saying "go get us some beer".
