How does a team manage to get a playoff home game? Just a question.......
Butch, teams can agree to flip for sites. When it comes to playoff games, lots of stuff can be negotiable. Location, Date, Time, who are the officials, gate admission, so on and so forth. It's what both schools can agree upon.
And sometimes, it makes sense to play at one of the team's home fields. Neutral site games can often cost you money if the crowds are small. Last night, I rented our field to two private school teams for a playoff. They gave me a check for over $900 for field rentals, officials, EMS before the game and kept the gate. I hope they covered it with gate admission, but who knows (and remember, in UIL, I think you have to send the folks in Austin 15% off the top).
An old, wise coach told me of a time when his opponent insisted on flipping for home field on a playoff game. My friend was insistent on a neutral site, but the opponent persisted. So, my friend (who coached at a Central Texas school) said that for that night, his home field was Ysleta High School in El Paso, are you still interested in flipping for home? Soon after, the opposing coach, worried he might have to go to El Paso for a playoff game, agreed on a closer, neutral site.
