Nueces Canyon

So one could see a sixman game in late summer/early fall on a Friday night and float the Frio on Saturday? Cool, literally.

Hey, that's just around the corner from Garner State Park and the Frio River. Beautymous landscape. Crystal clear, cool spring waters, 80 foot Cypress trees and lots of flirtatious senoritas from Bexar. Well, back in the 80's and 90's they were.

sounds like a great job for you coach....if you need a assistant I'm all in ...I love that country

That's right, me and the boss are a team. I don't go without her and the kids. She trains me and I train the kids...lol! Someone is going to get four dandy athletes, a prodigy and one loser. But gotta take the bad with the good.

I'm going to bite the bullet and shamefully advertise a little. Someone is going to benefit big time when these four are finally settled in one place for good. Its still early, but it appears we have three stinkin good athletes under this roof. The fourth is blessed and uninterested so far. I recall Tyler telling me and his mother how he hated football and just wanted to play basketball and baseball...think that was his fifth grade year. So there's hope for the fourth . Brax is going to be more athletic than Ty. Not physically as tough as Ty yet. CoCo is. Just look at his face for the proof.

The kids are about 1/3 in to a hand-eye program that has blown me away with the improvements they have made. Braxton has picked up every catch I know except over the head. Actually, he and CoCo both refuse to catch from over the top, instead they do what they call "The Odell". Cracks me up. At first it was more of a Stetson> Pardon the pun Stet. The first week we worked on it they would fall on their hind parts hard trying to make the Odell. Told them they were going to knock a piece of their cocyxx (sp?) off, which hurts exceedingly.
Next on our agenda is throwing mechanics. Have done a little since August. CoCo is a natural and Braxton is progressing surprisingly well. Truthfully, Jaylen is the best thrower so far. Reagan joins in but its hard to throw to a girl who is doing 100 cartwheels . We are working on the Tyler Earl, Lyle Campbell, Josh Thweatt , Brett Favre and the Josh Robertson throws. These are rolling lt and rt option, beating the rusher and looking down field simultaneously, sprinting lt and rt option pitch or pass, the under-handed while in the grasp throw, and the 30 yard throw while in the grasp ,respectively. It took three years for Tyler to master those. Well, never did the Thweatt as well as we wanted, so rarely used it in a game. Planning on doing Braxton in the same timeframe. Cant hurt to try.

Speaking of the Nueces Canyon area, Leakey and Rocksprings would be nice spots for starting six-man programs. Especially Leakey. It is the healthiest environment I have ever visited. NC would be good, too, but is out of the way compared to the other two. Nueces Canyon makes two six-man programs in that area. I think there are a couple more that would be good spots to start. The other being Tilden McMullen.
I learned last year that Steve Austin's Broken Skull Ranch is in that area, also. My kids love his show and have been begging to drive down this summer and challenge his obstacle course.

The area is some of the most beautiful in the state. Every Texan should float the Frio at least once.
However, due in part to that beauty, and it's proximity to San Antonio, Garner SP is the most heavily used State Park in the state. About 5 years ago staying below the park we took the kids above it on the river for a float down to it. Went in to pick them up and the river area was packed, and trashed. Literally trash cans over flowing, trash scattered all over. Different jam boxes blasting different mariachi songs. Seems like a little heavy metal too. The same very basic cabin you can get for $60 at Inks Lake is $120 at Garner. The drives North and West of there are awesome.

Sorry, but there is no such thing as a good Angora goat. Most are just looking for a place to die. Ha Chased a many up and down the Mountains in Big Bend area. Ha

The best time to go is a day or two after a holiday and after a weekend. The park workers do wonders cleaning up afterwards. And try to time it just after a good rain in the area. The water level is up and it's possible to raft for miles. It was a much better experience before the east bank was cleared and developed.
The mountain is still terrific. However, it can do damage to a careless climber. One of my daughters friends fell about 20 feet, landing on her face. She wasn't beautiful again for six or eight months. It could have been mucho worse.
These pics don't do it justice.

It seems like half the people from the canyon are related to me, including several of the players, so I'm working a little harder on this than I normally would.

BE ... I went down to Tilden a few years ago at the request of a couple locals to talk about starting six man football. They have a neat track stadium that could be easily converted into a football field, but the AD is a basketball guy and it would impact his sport. The sup was a nice guy but he told the locals that it would cost a million dollars to get a football program started up (field renovations, bleachers, equipment, stuff like that).

Since they would be playing their non-district games against private schools in the San Antonio area and I started up a varsity program a few years before, I guess they thought I knew what I was talking about. They figured out that the football team would have less travel than their basketball team.

I told my friends there that if they gave me a contract for $950,000, I could get the program going and I'd split the profit with them 50-50.

The problem with many administrators is that they are figure-heads and politicians rather than leaders and visionaries. Many of them were not very good teachers so decided they would have to get out or climb up the ladder. Then they become weak principals who are not very good leaders, so they decide to get out or continue up. Finally they get a superintendent position and figure out that being sub-par is good and safe because many boards want to run the school anyway.
The educational system is one of the only professions where those who are insufficient or incompetent can climb to the top.

Let me offer one example of how some of these guys think. I called a school who rumor had it was contemplating switching to six-man. I was told by one of their admins. that they still had some football talent available, and as long as they did they would play 11-man. He went on to say the talent would run out in a couple of years and then they would make the move. I was drinking coffee and with that comment lost it all into my lap. After a minute I responded how Throckmorton had recently come down and how they made the good decision to make the transition while there was still good talent there. He just giggled and said that Throck' was totally empty of athletes when they changed. I corrected him and explained how I was pretty sure they had gone 6-4 their last year in 11-man and how most of the team was filled by a strong sophomore class. Again he laughed it off and said I was misinformed.
Finally, getting a little irritated I informed him how the greyhounds had barely been beaten in the semis, then won it all the following year. And I let him know they had since won three additional state championships. He paused and said, well, let's remember it is six-man and six-man doesn't require the same level of talent as 11-man.
I ended the converse by asking him if he was going to stay after making the switch. He said he would if possible. With that said I went back to staring at the wall.
