No ! Not recruiting again !

Happens everyday at every level of anything that is competitive!! Sports, acedemics, music, arts, business, volunteer work, everything that presents some level of competition makes people want to improve their chances, so naturally they would want to better their team or whatever by bringing on more talent!!

My point exactly. Recruiting goes back to time long past. Every army, Vikings, Greeks, Romans, you name the time frame, each wanted their own “ Champion “ at times it was how wars and battles were fought, between the “Champions “ of each.
It is the sin of EGO, Edging GOD out ! Some do it for personal selfish reasons. Some are driven to it and others just want to satisfy their vanity.
Ultimately the price is paid by the kids, the ones they owe their livelihood to. Winning is a good thing, but winning at any cost is harmful beyond belief. In battle you may be faced with the sacrifice of 10 so that 6 can complete the mission. Football ain’t War, and kids lives should not be treated casually so that an “adult “ can complete their personal, self serving gratification of their EGO. I’ve said before, especially to younger coaches, if you 45 someone in the first half, just because you can, and the other team drove 250 miles round trip, and over half your players never get into the game, you are one of those I pity and have no respect for.
And if you’re a really young coach with years and years left in your career, don’t be surprised if your always looking for games because of you are driven to destroy every opponent, don’t be surprised if someday your only opponents for the season are your district or conference opponents. That’s happing everyday and is following you around.
Not such a great way to build a long term future, sacrificing the future for today.
That’s how it looks from here........, just another opinion.

That is a nice article. I'm sure back in the oil boom days some of that actually happened. And a large portion was fabricated. Even the locals used to make jokes about it and get a few laughs. But like he said, people started to believe all of those stories, and when the ones who knew the truth were no longer around to deny the fiction, the fiction became fact.

Some of it might have been exaggerated, but a bunch got left out too. My immediate family lived in the Woodson, Breckinridge area from the time they were born 1918, 1922, until the late 1950’s. I was born there. But we lived in Woodson, Throckmorton County. So did Jerry Tubbs, until he became a Buckaroo, from Cowboy to the Cowboys with a couple of stops in between. Bob Lilly was from Throckmorton County too. Funny how they both ended up with Dallas. Most of the folks don’t even know who I’m talking about Johnny, but you do I’m sure.

Jerry Tubbs and siblings lived a couple miles south of my Uncle T. C.'s ranch in northern Stephens county (Breckenridge ISD). Jerry and his brother Nealbern worked for my uncle a summer or two helping to build fence and haul hay. My uncle thought that Jerry and his older brother always attended Breckenridge schools but possible they might have attended elementary school elsewhere, so I don't think any recruiting was involved in Jerry's playing at Breckenridge. Jerry's grandfather Alex (A. N.) Harbison moved to the Ivan community of Stephens county in 1901 so that is another indication that Jerry was a native Breckenridge Buckaroo. I had always heard that Jerry Tubbs was from the Breckenridge area but not aware that he was a neighbor to my Aunt and Uncle until I saw Jerry's tombstone in the same small cemetery that my Aunt Rosie is buried. Jerry's mother, dad, brother and some grandparents are buried there too. For those who have taken the time to read this, Gerald J. (Jerry} Tubbs is a member of the Texas High School Hall of Fame, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, finished fourth in the 1956 Heisman Trophy voting (he was a lineman), Jerry's Oklahoma football teams won nothing but national championships(never lost a game) while he was in Norman and of course played ten years of professional football for mostly the Dallas Cowboys then coached for the Cowboys for 22 years. He was one of the first Cowboys voted to the Pro Bowl in 1962. Even Earl Campbell's phenomenal career pales in comparison to Jerry Tubbs! He was a true legend in his own time.

just to be clear I;m not referring to Jerry Tubbs. I'm referring to FCSA football's 2nd post about recruiting and young coaches 45ing people. Don't know any facts on Mr. Tubbs except he appears to have been a helluva football player, coach and person.

Why doesn’t anybody talk about kids/ recruiting concerning schools that are less desirable in sports and academics? If you were wanting to improve your kids high school experience why wouldn’t you choose a school that has a proven leadership role? Iron sharpens iron.

What leader and what type of leadership are you angling for?

Texas Longhorn:
RE: Jerry Tubbs
RE: Ivan- my dad was born close to Ivan, mom was born close to Lusk, 3 miles south of Woodson, Throckmorton county and 1 mile north of “Tubbs Place” just a few feet across the Stephens/Throckmorton count line. The first beer stop on 183 on the Breckinridge highway. Our family cemetery is northeast of Breckinridge, south of Ivan and southwest of Possum Kingdom. My family was well acquainted with most folks in that area including the Tubbs family. Not doubting anything you were told but most of my family lived all around that area until the Great Drought caused some to move away looking for work.
Jerry went to Oklahoma where they went 31-0 in the three years he was there. He was also an Academic All American. Great football player, great coach and all around great guy. He was a man’s man.
P S : I don’t think he ever “took a knee”.

P S : I don’t think he ever “took a knee”.[/quot Thanks for your personal information. I spoke with my Uncle T.C. yesterday afternoon and he evidently knows the neighborhood better than most Texans since he has lived on the family ranch since 1927 which is north of where the Tubbs family resided. My two cousins went to Breckenridge and they were legal football playing Buckaroos so I assume anyone south of them would be Buckaroos too. He is 92 years old and still lives on his great grandfather's section of land. The Clearfork Cemetery where Jerry Tubbs is buried is on my uncle's property, visit it on Find A Grave under Gerald J Tubbs Stephens county, Memorial # 195171216. RE: My father graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1946 after fighting in the south Pacific in WWII and knew more than just a few people in the area too.

Like it only happens in Texas HS Football? Hey, I got a bridge in New York, clear title, real cheap. Give me a call.

In my misspent youth back up in Wisconsin, one of the schools in our district was Kohler High School. Yeah, that Kohler. Like the toilets. Anyway, Kohler was (and may still be) a "company town." When you bought your house in Kohler, you didn't buy the land, you got a 99 year lease on the land from the Kohler Company.

Anyway, being it the 70s and high-paying union jobs were always well-regarded, it was amazing how many good football and basketball athletes ended up with their daddies working at Kohler and moving to the Kohler School District.

Now, a few years after I moved to Texas, I'm at some sporting event and somebody mentioned that they had relatives working for Kohler in Brownwood, Texas. Some how, my feeble memory is that there was some famous football coach there. Now I found out how he got his talent!

Now you are really in the Toilet. Brownwood was a powerhouse while I was in high school in the late 60's. I was always reading stories of how some of the skilled Early players wound up playing for Gordon Wood in Brownwood. Just a natural thing.

Well Longhorn that’s good info. My dad served from 43 to 45 as well. God, what a Fantastic Generation! He would be 102 this coming January. I’ll be 70 this month. My recollections are pretty good too. Ask your uncle which of the folks he knew suddenly got good jobs at the car dealerships and who all drove the newest cars.
MY uncles worked at those car dealerships and were none to happy about who got those “jobs” and cars.
You get the last word, I’m done and a heck of a lot closer to the sources. On by the way, we moved to Ingleside in the ‘50’s, guess where Bellard was before Breckinridge? If you want to go back in history it’s better to have been an observer rather than a listener. Your turn finish it up and let’s get back to what’s best for TODAYS kids.

FCSA let's not Slander the name of Jerry Tubbs on this website because some players were brought into Breckenridge to play football. Nothing you have mentioned is anything but hearsay and the rumblings of what your uncles said happened. The Tubbs were residents of Stephens county which placed them in the Breckenridge ISD to begin with. Let's not Smear the name of Yesterday's kids just because they happened to be great players, spare our TODAYS kids that.

Hey shorthorn. Apparently you don’t read, or maybe you don’t comprehend,or maybe you’re incapable of either. I said nothing negative about Jerry Tubbs, quite the opposite. I said he was a great player, Academic All American, a great coach, and a man’s man. As far as rumors, you are a lot farther from the source/truth than I. As anyone’s that has read your past trite drivel knows, you!are simply a person that can’t stand to see a dried cow pile, you just have to bust it up because you love the smell so much.
Anyone who reads this entire thread knows my posts were about recruiting and how it’s nothing new. I’ve included a link that came from the Dallas newspaper. Breckinridge, unfortunately at one time was synonymous with recruiting. I was born there, lived there and had to listen to the facts of those times. You offer nothing but Your take on things, and hot air. Oh yeah, I mentioned Bob Lilly was from Throckmorton County and a Dallas Cowboy as well. I guess in your myopic mind I trashed him too?

Yes, there will always be rule benders. Just for one more victory. It's not about the kids, like a lot of them say it is; it's for one more win for themselves. If they can live with themselves, I guess we can too. They will always be cheaters. Just like a leopard can not change their spots, they can't change their ways. It's pitiful that it has come to that!
