This day in history: Abraham Lincoln pardoned his half-sister-in-law. The half-sister of Mary Todd Lincoln, Emilie Todd Helm was the widow of Confederate General Benjamin Hardin Helm, killed at the Battle of Chickamauga. At his death, the Lincolns mourned privately, worried that any public displays would cause riots in the north.

Helm's Texas connection is his brief service at a cavalry school in Texas named for a Captain in the Mexican War, who was killed at the battle of Buena Vista. This fort, coincidentally? Fort Lincoln, near present-day D'hanis.
