My realignment proposal to the UIL

sinfonian

11-man fan
For the past five alignments I have created my own set of alignments with the idea of making things more fair for schools and resolving some of the chief complaints, those being disparity in size among the largest and smallest schools in each classification, and travel distance. I have taught in different functions at school districts including a district with multiple 5A schools (Now 6A), a 3A (Now 4A) district, three 2A (Now 3A) districts, and two 1A districts that played 6-man football. I have coached football and track, been a band director, directed one-act play, and coached various academic and debate teams, and feel that I have a unique insight into the various aspects of the classification process and the challenges these schools face.
Once again, I decided this time to follow the trends already being established by the UIL and I came up with a plan that divides division 1A as you have already done. In my proposal we would actually take this a step further. In class 1A we divide football into two divisions. This is actually a very good idea and helps to get rid of the disparity from top to bottom. There is no reason, however, to have this division in football and not extend it to basketball, spring sports, and academic events. The smaller schools really cannot compete against schools up to four times their size, not just in football, but also in basketball, track and field, One-act play, band, and academic events, and this would give them a shot at success for the first time. In addition, by having only one district for all sports, the experience of having real district rivalries is increased as well.
In my proposal division 1A follows what the UIL has already done. I have renamed the divisions within this as they should be; calling them 1A and 2A. I have also added a division to the top end in order to end the disparity argument. Most of the districts have 5 to six members, which the UIL has already demonstrated that they are willing to use. The argument of distance is moot, as most schools will be able to play all of the same teams they have played previously, and will be able to choose more of the teams they play, unlike the unfortunate teams who had been placed into ten team districts in past alignments, especially those of West Texas who already had the furthest travel times of any schools in Texas.
The top six divisions all have a fairly even number of football-playing schools in them, filled out with schools that do not elect to play football, so there is no division with teams packed into districts like sardines, like those which in some cases exist currently and have existed in the past. There are fewer byes and more football districts than have existed in the past in the smallest division of 11-man schools division as well. With the schools being more even as to size, the necessity of two divisions within a classification is negated and a clear-cut winner in each classification can be crowned, although that will be left up to the coaches in those divisions as it is currently. In the 6-man divisions there are thirteen and fourteen football districts respectively, and sixteen districts for all other activities.
The alignment took me approximately a week to complete in the afternoons after school each day, utilizing Google Earth (Which allows for far more accuracy than a pin in a map and string.) I am sure is by no means error free, but serves to prove the feasibility of such a plan.

Hoo boy, you did a LOT of work there.......

Nice proposal, but you you seriously expect the UI of L to be logical like that?

Well after suggesting it for 10 years, they finally split 1A. (Not saying it was in any way a result of my proposals, but I do know that they at least read them.) I really thought they would add an 11-man division before they split 1-A. I am also going to suggest that a school who opts to play up for 11-man football has to remain in that division for other events as well.

My only objection is your splitting of Richland Springs & Cherokee.
Schools in the same county less than 30 miles apart with a natural rivalry
should be in the same district. ................. Unless you are auditioning for
Drunk Monkey status with the UIofL..........

I know there's no easy way to do it, but like UIL, the mileage is incredible for some. You have Buckholts traveling to Chester (190 miles), High Island (230 miles) and Prairie Lea (117 miles). For a school with an attendance number of 44, the mileage would eventually be too much to bare. UIL, at least cut out Chester and gave us Calvert (26 miles). Not sure why Oglesby (53 miles) was left off, but when looking at the maps, we're geographically the odd man out when it comes to High Island, so I understand to effort. Great piece of work, but it goes to show, there is never a proposal that's perfect. Each one, UIL included, will benefit some, while hurting others.

A while back, Sanderson went to Dell City (260 miles) and Sierra Blanc (216 miles) plus to Water Valley to play Aspermont. People will say it is West Texas expect to travel and understand going through areas with more towns and more traffic takes longer, but in order to put your athletes in a situation to be successful, you just get on the bus.

Unfortunately, some schools have to travel further than others. Keep in mind, in those districts they only have to make 1 or 2 of those trips per year, per sport, and they can schedule the rest of the games with closer schools, as the district sizes are smaller. It isn't unusual for the schools in far west Texas to have to drive 150 miles + to attend a district event. We just need to talk a few more East Texas schools into playing real football and the distances will decrease further. The point of this was a plausibility study, and they are actually already dividing us into 2 divisions for football, so feel free to take what they have already done there and apply it to every other event, and ignore my proposal as to possible districts. It is especially designed to show that the 11-man schools can add a division without much trouble.

That was the district this past year. Grandfalls, Dell City, Sanderson, Balmorhea, Buena Vista and Sierra Blanca. That is always a lot of driving. Next year GR will travel to Dawson and Sands. Both are over 150 just for district. I think that is just how it will always be due to the split in divisions.

I'm curious, has anyone from UIL or the ones claiming mileage "is just part of the game" ever been a teacher/coach that got to school at 6:00am on a Friday, after a full week of 14 hour days, and then asked to get behind the wheel of a bus, full of kids, after midnight to drive home? It's funny how easy it is to forget the responsibility of the safety of our student-athletes when athletics are involved. 20 hour days are not easy for anyone, much less the one driving and being responsible for the well-being of so many parent's kids, especially after a game where, most coaches, give everything they have and are emotionally and physically drained afterwards. I realize there's travel involved in athletics, but in 6-man, we're the ones driving - not a bus driver who is rested. And we don't have nine coaches to choose from, or who can split the distance if fatigue is a factor. I've never been one to complain about work or travel; and will remedy my four hour drive to High Island this year with a Saturday game. Never claimed I wasn't willing to drive for the kids. Just wish the ones making the schedule or passing judgment on those of us hoping for "real" solutions, comprehended the demands they ask of the smaller school coaches. Or, just put their child on the bus after one of these games and trust God to help guide that bus home.

another of my favorite jaunts was Talpa to Marathon. A cool 276 miles one way. Silverton to Texline and Higgins was just hop skip and jump. Ha Coach Satcher, if I have a nickle for every mile I drove a yellow dog, would be pretty rico. Ha

Maybe with High Island staying down Coach, more school in that area will go 6man and they can have their own district. I was lucky enough to just have to drive a van to Dell City this year on a Tuesday for a girls bball game. We left at 12:30 and returned at 11:30. I know your pain.

I hear ya', and understand. For those reasons, when I did coach, or direct one-act, or was in charge of some other activity that I knew would come in very late, I told them that they HAD to find a driver for the safety of the students. The drone of that bus engine at one in the morning becomes a little much after an exhausting day, and the safety of the students is not where you cut costs. I'm at a little larger school today, but I still tell them that same thing.
