actually it was oxygen... there's a great book I read this year called The Year of Wonder: How the romantic generation discovered the beauty and terror of Science. It won all sorts of literary awards in 2009 for science writing. If you are so inclined, I highly recommend it.

Learned this leasson the hard way when I was on a 3 week assignment to Brazil.... as if you would have trouble distinguising between the sexes in Brazil.

The answer I was searching for is the 19th century. There was more evolution in design in the 1800s than at any other time.
