I have an idea - if you want to bad mouth a coach and/or team, post your real name. Don't hide behind a screen name.

If all internet forums required real names, the internet would be a better place.

My real name is Charles, but my dad started calling me Cowboy before I was a year old. I've been answering to it for 40 years, so I don't see any reason to change now.

You know what my mom used to tell me " excuses are like a@$%**** everyone has one". To say that " we don't long kick because we don't have a kicker to long kick, it is just that "an EXCUSE" every kid in America can kick a ball 15 or 20 yards and on a 80 yard long field starting at the 30 well that is good enough. To empower weakness in the form of bad sportsmanship is not the type of thing I would what me kids learning. Now here is a quote from a Pastor Michael " coach the way you would want other to coach towards you" think of it this way you win this year, but what about next year or the next or the next. Lets teach our kids what respect and honor is not what winning is, because if we fail to do so they want know what to do when the lose.

Me thinks you've watched a little too much 11-man my friend. I've grew up playing 6 man, and now coaching 6 man. I've seen many more injuries on deep kicks than an onside kick. Onside kicks you'll get the pretty little smack sounds from the collision, but with both players going full speed hitting each other, deep kicks over time have shown to be more dangerous in 6 man. Having been on both really good and really bad teams in my past, I've never felt insulted or mad when a team onside kicked from the start all the way to the finish, even if it was over at half.

I agree, I don't see an onside kick, especially in six man, as being unsportmanlike, at any point in the game. Even if you were there, you don't know what was in the coaches head. Isn't the whole point of pre-district to get ready for district? Maybe he wasn't happy with their previous onside kick and wanted them to do it again, and do it right this time. Maybe, he thought that a deep kick this late in the game could get someone hurt unnecessarily. Maybe he told the kids to kick it onside, cover well, and if they just fall on it, leave it at that. Maybe he told his kicker to kick it deep and he didn't listen and got his but chewed later. There are lots of maybe's, there are lots of different things that could have happened, but for someone to chalk it up to unsportsmanlike without knowing the actuals, seems kinda whiny.

Onside kicks are rare in 11 man and done to try and get the ball back. Yes onside kicking in the example given would be sorry if it were in 11 man. In six man, onsides are often done because of the risk of a big runback. Giving up a touchdown on a kick return can change the course of the game. Sure its always nice if the receiving team doesn't follow their assignments and turns the ball over, but I believe I can confidently say that 6 man coaches spend more time on covering onside kicks than they do on blocking assignments for deep kicks. Normally the receiving team gets the ball at midfield and no one gets hurt.

Wow, somebody today can think outside of the box actually? I'm impressed:) And to think they're from Gordon..lol just messing with ya HornKeeper:)

Still sounds like excuses for excuses! The facts are what they are, Onside or deep kick people get hurt no one disputes that , but it was a nice way of avoiding the real statement I made " coach the way you want the coach on the other side to coach against you" if you want violence coach violence if you want good sportsmanship coach that way. We all lose sometime and yes I coach 6-man football 3rd year doing so.

Sorry, the National Texas High school 6-Man Football Statistic Assc. states more kids are injured in onside kicks then any other play in 6 man football. .....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................OH! I made that up kinda like you don't know which play they get hurt on the most either, its not tracked. Kids get hurt playing football! There are better ways to handle yourself on and off the field "loveofgame". That was the subject.

Well, I know in your three years of being involved with this sport we called six man you have prolly become a subject matter expert, but I can tell you from my over 10 years of playing, and coaching it, that you sir, are wrong. I've seen just as many kids get hurt on cracks or cuts, where are a part of nearly every play than on onside kicks.

3 years? If you are still involved in another 7 years, please report back if you still feel the same way. That's all I ask.

I can tell you both even after only three years coaching 6 Man football I can spot a quack or some with low character! It take s a great amount of character to, one insult a Pastor and two to teach kids that the only way is to run the score up. Also in your rant about 20 yard lanes for 6 man and 14 for 11 man just proves your lack of knowledge after 40 years or whatever you said I guess the college didn't teach math where you went (see how easy it is to insult some one even one as great as you) . With a 40 yard wide field 4 players would have a 10 yard lane(with over laps 15 yards) with 2 safety players to catch the ones that get through. However don't take my little experienced opinion how about Dallas Covenant, I watched one of their games and long kick is all they did. I know it can be hard to take 30 minutes out of practice to teach a kid to kick a ball and teach kids to run lanes? The facts are still the facts EXCUSES. For some one with your great experience and knowledge you should have been able to learn how to teach or coach this simple thing. hmmm running the score up or just can't do it!

Pastor ... the quote about lanes is one I heard at a clinic; the sixman field is 40 yards (120 feet) wide. 120 divided by 6 is 20 feet ... 10 on each side of the six guys lined up on the kickoff. The 11 man field is 160 feet wide, so 160 divided by 11 is 14.5 feet, or 7.25 feet on each side of the 11 guys lined up on the kickoff. Feet, yards, we all get mixed up. At least it's not metric.

Again, it's a factor in the six-man game that usually if you can break one tackle, you're off to the races. True on kickoffs, true on every play from scrimmage. Just more likely in 6 man than 11 man.

As for injuries on kickoffs, I have not heard the statistic that 6-man onside kicks create the most injuries. I have heard, generally, about football that the kickoff is probably the most dangerous play in football and probably the reason many rules have been written in the game (in the early days of football, the "flying wedge" formation was common on kickoffs and was made illegal because of the many injuries that occurred). Occasionally, you hear about proposals to restrict or eliminate the kickoff (for example, giving the team scored upon the ball at the 20 yard line following a score.

Perhaps in our lifetime, the kickoff will be limited to game starts like the basketball jump ball is now only limited to the opening tip.

Well put freeagent! My apologies! I will still stick to the thought that we can clean up the game and make it respectable by all! As far as injuries go I have heard form both sides of the ball game that injuries tend to be less in 6 man but more severe in nature when they do happen> Don't know this to be true again there are no statistics on out out there. Who knows maybe I will start the first web site to track injuries and how they happen and during what plays? Would be good and helpful to those coaches that love the game and care about their kids well being! God Bless you all even the stubborn ones this has been fun can't wait til our next good debate! Pastor Michael out be safe this weekend! I will be praying for all the players safety here in Texas and abroad!
