This is probably more technical than you guys will want to hear. In the book that the movie "The Searchers" was made from, his character does die. There was a couple of more major events changed to fit the storyline of the movie. May be why the title was changed.

Its terrible to give out bad trivia! The book that I read way back when was a Reader's Digest condensed version. Its title was "The Hunters" with the "The Searchers" in paranthesis as the screenplay. I just looked up Alan Le May on Wikipedia and they give the title of the book as "The Searchers", so what do I know?

Uncle. Had to do a web search, still not positive. Didn't find one with Laurel and Hardy. But Hardy was in the Fighting Kentuckian with him - in a straight role, maybe that's why I never noticed or remember hearing of it.
Pretty sure ya'll are right on the 3x he died.
