Independent Schools ONLY, not affiliated with any league!

11-man fan
My Athletic Director, Boyce Paxton, and myself, Gordon Cyr would like to invite any and all INDEPENDENT 6-man teams to have a play-off system for the 2007-2008 season. TAPPS is forcing us to move up to 11-man, because of our numbers (which seems more than it really is, because of our International student numbers). We are opting to stay in 6-man, due to financial reasons, not enough staff (coaches), and not enough players to be able to compete in 11-man. We're willing to be the lead facilitators, and help organize everything, but we will need some help from time to time, and we need some teams to join us in our venture. Depending on the number of schools that are interested will determine if we have divisions, or just one bracket system. I'm hoping to have 10-20 schools want to be a part of this. The kids want and deserve more to play for than just wins and a ranking on sixmanfootball.com, so let's give it to them. We have a field that we would be willing to host play-off games at as well. I'm going to start contacting schools a.s.a.p. so we can schedule games against eachother for next year. I already have Pine Drive, and Rosehill on my schedule for next year, but I'll wait to hear from anyone that will take us up on the idea. We can have a meeting to discuss details and brainstorm when we get an idea if anyone is interested. I can be reached at 832-859-2331. Don't wait too long, because everyone is starting scheduling for next year. CLCS Coach Gordon Cyr

Mr. Cyr,

You may want to DOUBLE check with TAPPS because I noticed on other sports such as Volleyball and basketbal that Clear Lake Chrisitian is participating in TAPPS.
TAPPS WILL NOT let you have an independent football playoff because your school plays OTHER TAPPS sports.

I've read this type of thread on here many times....

John Taddy of Seguin Lifegate or Edd Burleson of TAPPS can fill you in.

Good luck

Mr. Cyr,

It might be better to just leave tapps and join a league that will allow you to do what you want. The new leagues are growing at very high rate because of the same type of problems that you are facing.

From what I've been told, it seems almost as if TAPPS owns us or something. In order to do something, they want you all or none. Coach Paxton said that they wouldn't even let us play in T-CAL for football (at least when he talked to them before). I don't understand what it would hurt. We want to play, but not just for a win/loss record. We're already in deep with TAPPS, and we're not going to pull out of everything. The only area that we're hurting in, is football. I'm just going to schedule the games and play them I guess. I'm still going to make some phone calls though. Coach Gordon Cyr

Gordon:

You can, like Pasadena First Baptist and Houston Emery, play independent six-man football with larger enrollment. Moving from 6 man to 11 man is not a decision you make on a whim because you now have too many boys enrolled for six man district play -- I've seen schools try it without the thought and preparation and it is not pretty.

Take the next two years to play independent; maybe start 11 man at the junior high level if that's where you see your school going in 2010-2012 and build the support and resources to make the switch at varsity.

What TAPPS (and UIL) does not allow is "dual membership" in another association. You also are restricted from playing games beyond the end of the regular season in that sport (in football, week 10).

I think the rule was changed or clarified several years ago as I do remember a couple larger TAPPS schools playing in TCAL for six-man football (San Antonio Lutheran comes to mind).

I'm not speaking in any official capacity on this, but TAPPS seems to have allowed teams to play in a "tournament" situation as long as it concludes by Week 10 in football.

There is a reason for TAPPS' madness on this. If schools were allowed to join multiple leagues, you would find schools that would switch back and forth for all sorts of reasons. I might find that we'd have a better chance of winning a basketball title in a smaller league so I'll play there for a couple years. But then, I get sick of winning 99-11 in the finals, so I move back to TAPPS, thinking I've got a chance of winning that title.

If that is allowed to happen, districts and schedules would be useless, because there's no doubt in my mind that some schools would do it (especially in the lower classes, 1A-3A) and some of those would wait until "the last minute" to decide where their "best chances" lie.

But again, all this is my opinion and taking that still means you need 50 cents or a buck to buy a cup of coffee at a cheap joint.
