I read many years ago Lombardi had the field heaters turned off the night before.

I think Lombardi was worried that the system might not work if run all night and planned to start them up the next morning.

John, that maybe true, but Lombardi was worried about the speed of the Dallas Cowboys,Bob Hayes was then the fastest human ever recorded in the world,gb on a thawed track could not, did not, have the speed to keep up with Bob Hayes,The hero of the game Chuck Mercein was one of the slowest white guys in the whole league, but keeping the track frozen, made Mercein rock n roll in the last 4 minutes of the game,he was slow but had great balance ,Donny Anderson was the fast one,but could'nt use his speed due to the conditions,,Great what 47 years later we can still talk of this game.good stuff

Lombardi was no fool

I remember riding to my grandparents house in Irving and the 1966 NFL championship was on the radio "live' from the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Cowboys - Packers, I think it was blacked out locally. I watched the Ice Bowl at my Aunt and Uncles house in Bowie, on Black and White TV. I know I'd seen other games or parts of them but it's the first one I really remember watching, and feeling despair at the end. One more stop and they had it won.

I had never heard the Cowboys broadcast of the Ice Bowl until today ... and like today, the Cowboys were an equal opponent on the field as in 1966 and 1967.

I honestly thought it was a catch and was wondering what was going on in McCarthy's mind to challenge it. But he knew the rule and I didn't. Until I heard Peretta on FOX saying that the call should have been incomplete there's no way I would have said the call would be overturned. And I'm not sure in most cases a coach would have thrown a challenge flag. Anyway, Dallas most certainly would have scored but Green Bay would have still had 3+ minutes and at least two time outs to get in position for a game winning field goal and I have no doubt the Packers would have prevailed.

But the tough test will be next Sunday in Seattle. I think the Cowboys match up better than the Packers against the Seahawks. But we'll see. If Aaron plays like 2nd half Aaron, Packers win. If he plays like 1st half Aaron, well, that's another matter.

I get the official "ruling" that it wasn't technically a catch but c'mon man! There's no place else from the front yards or in the school yards all across America. Anyone and everyone knows Bryant cleanly made an amazing circus CATCH. The NFL needs to clean up their house, stat. Change that insane definition,The Cows would have went for two after the TD if they made it,would have been 29-26 FG would have tied

Two feet down, forearm down by contact, would not have been called a fumble for a RB. But incomplete pass by league rules. That was a tough one.

What ever happened to the ground can't cause a fumble. It was a catch. He maintained control coming down. His knee was down. He was down.
Oh, well. I don't think they would have stood a chance of beating Seattle at home again.
