Homecoming Games

Once upon a time .. sixman teams used to schedule a rival school for homecoming .. in the hope of beating them relentlessly and looking good, which didnt always happen as planned . Bonfires were burnt prematurely .. fields were doused with gasoline in the other teams letters, and even when rivals were not playing each other the shenanigans would go on . Seems this doesn’t happen any more but I would love to hear folks discuss current homecoming games of note this year and even old stories of years gone by. Go!

You ought to remember a few of these. It wasn't that many years ago Strawn was indebted to Gordon for the Longhorn's kindness in letting the Hounds play home games in Gordon. After a former student from one of them did some pretty severe donuts on the SHS field. If I remember right. Though that wasn't for homecoming. Seems like I do remember them burning each others bonfires a night early more than once just in the last 20 - 25 years.

You know me better than that.. I wasnt gonna center on Gordon vs Strawn... because this is a statewide game.. but yes i know about the tree and and the doughnuts.. I was there in the late 80s and early 90s

I was not involved.. just knew about it.. and we were so distracted that we lost to Moran in our homecoming game and ended up tied for District Champ

Well, well, well,....the gate and concession proceeds ought to be really good! The possibilities for payback for last year are abundant, but can May pull anything like that off? They seem to be able to win in Zephyr at the Jr. High and JV levels, but winning in Zephyr at the Varsity level always seem tougher.

Isn't the "homecoming" rules for coaches something like this ...

-- no big district competition, so that there isn't the homecoming distractions from game preparation
-- a probable win.

A coach told me once of taking a new job as HFC/AD at a school. Looked at the schedule left for him by his predecessor. Five road games, all the opponents' homecoming opponent. Kind of got an idea that the team he inherited wasn't that good.

He went 5-1 in homecoming games that year. Won all five on the road, lost his own. Said he never was a homecoming opponent after that.
