Holiday projects--please add your own

Other than updating things on the website and starting to make changes to ready for the new alignment, I thought I would add my project I will be doing with my son's during the month.

I have a raspberry pi (credit card-sized computer) board that we are going to put together. My oldest thinks he wants to turn it into a Minecraft server. Anyone have any experience with this? I actually have a book on hacking the pi. We are gathering the other materials we will need for the project. (power, USD hub, old monitor and keyboard, cables, SD card….)

I think we actually build our own wooden case (or maybe even use leftover cardboard for starters). This way the 6-year old can decorate it and be involved.

Sounds interesting. I wouldn't use cardboard.....I don't guess you would generate much heat but better to err on the side of caution ...........

Zimba Mission Hospital

Zimba Mission Hospital (ZMH) is located in Zambia, Africa. It was founded in 1960. It was started as a clinic but upgraded to a hospital a few years later. Rev. Clarence and Rev. Roberta Keith started the pioneer medical work in Zimba. For the past 50 years, thousands of patients have received physical and spiritual healing at ZMH.

ZMH is located in the town of Zimba in the Southern Province of Zambia. Zimba is situated along the main road from Livingstone to Lusaka. It is 50 miles northeast of Livingstone and 250 miles southwest of Lusaka. The population for the town of Zimba is 11,000. ZMH has the only operating room in the area for 3 health districts. The catchment population for surgical and obstetric patients is 330,000.

ZMH has 100 inpatient beds. There are 6 inpatient wards including adult male, adult female, pediatrics, maternity, male TB, and female TB. The average daily inpatient census is 50. The maternity ward has an average of 50 deliveries per month. There is a surgery department. Elective cases are scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays. An average of 50 major and minor surgeries is performed each month.

My project for the New Year...I'll be going for a month serving there...
Please pray for those I will be coming in contact with...that they would be touched by our Lord and Savior...

There is an active chaplain program at ZMH. In the morning, daily chapel services in the local language of Chitonga are provided for patients and their family members. There is a Chitonga Bible distribution program. At night, the JESUS film in Chitonga is shown in the patient wards. A new chapel building was constructed in 2011.

Between Christmas and New Year we will be giving all our money to the Indian tribes around Ruidoso. That's charity, right? ............

I think PopRay beats you in the charitable giving department.

I'll second Smokey's advice on the cardboard case. Those processors - even with a heat sink, can get H O T.

I burned the crap out of my right index finger getting a little too grabby with a hot i5.

No special holiday project for me. I have a goal of finishing the living room by Christmas - well - December 13th. We're going to England to see my son and DIL over Christmas on the 16th, but we're leaving on Friday the 13th and driving to Dallas for the finals on Saturday.

Staying warm. We have a bunch of polar bears disguised as boy scouts this year. Just got off a campout this weekend with near zero temps. It got down to 4 Saturday night. Another campout scheduled for mid December and another in mid January.

An air bag? OBK, are you the only one with an air bag or do all of the scouts get to rough it in luxury? I am also thinking that the frozen north doesn't have any grass burrs, spiney plants like cactus, or even pine cones that might put little holes in air bags.

Of course, where you were at, there might have been a foot of snow. That would make air bags pretty much punture proof. That makes me cold just thinking about it!

Not inside a tent.

There are no grass burrs or goatheads up here like the south has.

yes, most of the scouts have either a self inflating air pad or a foam pad, or a hybrid of both. Check with the Scouts down there, I'll be they have the same stuff, I ought to know, as I bought almost all the equipment I use while I still lived in Texas.

Besides, If I were doing this in Texas, I seriously doubt I'd be sleeping on the ground. I'd be using a cot, as rattlesnakes like to cuddle to warm objects they encounter on the ground.
