Head Coach

What do you believe are some of the important qualities that make a head coach successful?
It's different for every school and community. Some will talk about relationships. Some will talk about leadership. Some will talk about building character. Some will talk about building a winning tradition. And some will talk about raising expectations within the program. Bottom line, in order for a coach to find the sweet spot and experience true job security, he has to decide whether his expectations meet the expectations of the administration. At the end of the day, if those two visions don't match, you'll seldom find harmony/success. Also, you have to be careful of the ever-changing expectations from administrators, because with success, comes raised expectations.

A good coach to look at is Mike Bigham of Motley Co as he’s been there since 2006. He has turned that program into a power house. One of his saying when I was in his program not just football but basketball and track is when you leave his program he wants you to be a better son, student, Friend and one day good husband and a good father. When you was out in the community you helped anyway you can because that’s what his program was all about and still is to this day. He wants you to succeed in life not just in sports.

Trust your players and let them know that you are not just their coach, but also someone they can come talk to about anything. Build a culture of Christian values and leadership. Wins and losses will come and go, but with a foundation of beliefs, even on bad years, the program will continue to grow.
