how do you list a job you would be assistant in before the one you would be a head coach in? Doesn't make much sense to me. Also, why does it say you have to have experience in the sport you are assistant in but nothing about the sport that you would be HEAD coach in? I looked on maxpreps at the basketball record and it says 2-10, not very good. So I think with all the emphasis on football, Evant must screw over other sports so they can be good in football. So I look at the football record and it says 4-4 with the 4 wins coming against academy/charter schools. I can positively say as a basketball coach to stay away from this school. Besides, it seems to be open every year. Thank about if your son played basketball, would you want him to go somewhere and get coached by a football coach, and not have the opportunity to win. What is popular isn't always right, What is right isn't always popular.

Intelligent people understand that a Basketball listing would require some sort of experience...if not why would you apply for a Basketball job. I imagine they wanted to make sure that whoever they hired would be qualified in more then one sport since this is the norm at small schools all around Texas...so how bout you chill out?

Just to clarify, we stress "always being competitive and winning on every opportunity" in all of our sports and that has been our tone since I took the AD job in May of last year. I simply listed the sports in the order that they occur, but having a defensive football scheme is just as important to us as having a press break. I personally think we should create a "job board" where it is harder for someone to display their ignorance in public forum, but allow dedicated six-man coaches to learn about new challenges that are available.

didn't think basketball was before volleyball, says nothing about volleyball requirements, i mean a person with basketball experience would know that you had to have experience to get a Head coaching job, but might not know that at a small school you have to coach a lot of different sports.

Thanks for helping make my point about the job board. If anyone is interested in the Girls Basketball Job please contact me since my info is listed above. We can combine different responsibilites if someone has a desire to do different sports.

i mean a person with basketball experience would know that you had to have experience to get a Head coaching job, but might not know that at a small school you have to coach a lot of different sports.

They also might not know whether the school played 6 or 11 man football, therefore, the listing of 6 man experience as a prerequisite. Seems like you have answered your own question. Not trying to stir things up at all, but I would just like to say, as a former head basketball coach, that not alll of us have a chip on our shoulder.

Don't know anything about Evant or the coaches that posted. Just my 2 cents.

I bet I can get a good debate on how universal offseason is how it has to be at a small school, how it helps the total program, and how winning at football translates into winning at other sports.

I graduated from a school that had less than 100 kids in the high school, 7 of us didn't play football but played basketball. In basketball we went to the regional tournament my junior and senior year, but in football they won only 3 games total. However, we could not touch a basketball until November, and our basketball coach was stuck with football duties.

Heres a simple solution, Lets say Evant has only three male coaches total, lets say a head football, head basketball, head baseball. During football season, in the period, all footballers are with the football and baseball coach, all nonfootballers are with the basketball coach. All nonfootball athletes are required to run cross country which is done in the morning with the boys and girls basketball coach. One coach has the weight room, one has the running part. You divide the nonfootball kids up into serious runner, and offseason conditioning groups. The serious runner group, does light weight work and heavy running, the offseason group does heavier lifting and lighter sprint work. This allows your cross country team to be successful and helps basketball/baseball kids get in shape for their season. During basketball season, alll basketballers are with the basketball coach in the period, baseball and football coach have nonbasketballers. During baseball, all baseball kids are with the baseball coach during the period, all nonbaseballers are with the football and basketball coach. After the period, all coaches help with the inseason sport. The football or basketball coach can take all nonbaseball kids after school for track practice. People on here may not like my opinion, but it is truly unjust to keep kids from being able to excel in other sports for the sake of a sport that the ad likes. And you can't be successful in a skill sport unless you practice that sport, time in the weight room is not equivalent.

My last post on this because I really wasn't trying to stir things up, Just had an opinion . . . Your last post really has nothing to do with bitching about the way the job was posted. Who knows how they actually do things there? You seemed to assume "sinister" motivations by the person posting the opening. BTW - your scenario has one more boys' coach than the school at which I am presently. Not all schools have the luxury of what you propose.

is this the Mark Smith from Whiteface who also went to WBU. Just wandering if it was someone I know, because it sounds like some things you would say.

hey matt, hows seminole? somebody has to stand up for the other sports, it was too much when this job was posted last year, and there was a response from a guy listing all this info about what he had done in football, and wanting to be a football head coach, but nothing about basketball. I also have never heard of someone listing the assistant spot before the head spot, doesn't make sense. Could you see a posting on thsca that said assistant track/Head Football?

Just a comment. I was fortunate to have groups of guys who were coaches, they were football coaches, basketball coaches, track, whatever was in season. Every one worked for the betterment of the program and we had some great success. People who want to be just one type of coach, whether it be football, basketball, curling, whatever need to stay out of small schools that participate in all sports. There are small schools who just play basketball, and bigger schools where you just have to coach one sport. The main thing is work for the good of the kids of that school and if you do not like what is going on, keep it to yourself and go to TABC or somewhere basketball is the main topic. This one says sixman football. Just my take, but what do I know.

if you just coach whatever is inseason you wont ever be successful, the one thing i learned from the last state basketball champion coach i worked for is that everyone is working and getting better from november to february, its what you do from february to november that determines how good you'll be. Just because its a sixmanfootball school doesn't mean you can do what it takes to be successful. Theres a reason that elkart slocum won the 1A division II state bball championship, and by the way this is a public forum, everybody that registers can voice their opinion. I have nothing against football, i have something against football coaches that screw over other programs for the sake of their sport. If you dont like that, then dont read what I write.

And how long have you coached? You can say whatever you want to say, that is the American way. What I object to is your jump on the guy from Evant for the way he advertises his job opening. As I said, you don't want to go to Evant or apply for job, fine, but don't get on his case because he does not list the job to suit you. The school you mention does not have any problem with football getting in the way, cause they do not play. You do not like football coaches who run over programs, how about basketball coaches who do the same?

We will not agree, but you might take a look at who you are mad at.

GATA Drifter, if some people on here don't like the fact that the football position was listed first to dang bad. Texas is not exactly known for its prowess in basketball. In fact, the sport we are best known for is football, just about every small town in Texas lives and breathes the sport. As someone as drifter describes who coaches mulitiple sports, or whatever is in season I feel honored to have the opportunity to touch the lives of so many young people. Also, I would add that no decent coach will undersell one sport over the other, because in order for the program to be good they need to be successful in all sports football-baseball. If you take offence to the fact that this state views Football first go somewhere else we don't need ya anyway.

hey mark i know you to well to try to argue this one with you, you just like to argue, i remember all to well. but it is a football website. maybe that is why he posted football first. maybe if he posted it on the basketball website he would post the basketball first. I don't know and it really in the scheme of things will be okay. haven't really talked to you in the past 10 years, so i would love to hear from you. my email is [email protected]
