D1 East - Region 3 - Playoffs!

I agree, Tioga should be in the discussion.

Round 1, Tioga/Newcastle vs Gordon/May. If I'm Gordon or May, I'm going to hope for Newcastle. Not because they are less likely to beat you, but because Tioga plays a different kind of football that throws a lot of people for a loop. Tioga is similar to Gordon in that they will wear you down with solid defense and control the clock, frustrating a team which causes them to make mistakes. Newcastle is always dangerous, not as good as recent years, they can still play. However, I'm going to take Gordon and May to win their round 1 games.

Rochelle vs Santa Anna. I'm taking Rochelle big. SA has the benefit of a weak district, otherwise, they wouldn't be making the playoffs.

Zephyr vs Paint Rock. I'll take Zephyr. Paint Rock obviously can step up to big games, and if they were to get Zephyr in the rain, like they did Eden, Zephyr will have to step up a little too to win.

Round 2, Gordon vs Rochelle. I'll take Gordon on a wet field, and possible on a dry field too. I think Gordon's defense can hold Rochelle to their lowest total points of the season and score enough to overtake them. I think this will be the closest game in all of Region III playoffs.

May vs Zephyr. Ill take Zephyr. May is down from their 2 championship appearances, Zephyr is hiding in the shadows, for now. I think Zephyr wins this one by 20+.

Round 3. Assuming I was correct in round 2, it will be Gordon vs Zephyr. It will be a rematch of last years defensive round 2 spectacular. Too close to call. I'll be a homer and take Gordon, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Zephyr come out on top either.

other possible round 3:
Rochelle vs Zephyr. I'll take Rochelle in this one. I think that Rochelle can handle Zephyr a lot better than Gordon can.
Gordon vs May. A rematch of last years Regional championship, and a rematch of the district 10 top 2. I think Gordon wins this one if they were to meet again. I may change my tune if May beats Gordon this week.
Rochelle vs May. Again, I'll take Rochelle, they are by far the better team, IMHO.

Gordon still has not played a game with all of their horses this year. Their QB sprained an ankle against Strawn. He finished the game noticeably gimpy and that would be big if he's slowed. Mackey looks back in form but the absence of Jorgenson will be a big factor. Hopefully back for week 12. Gordon at full strength would be formidable. Short-handed they are very vulnerable in the region.

Shad...

No offense to the teams they have played but, who is it that Tioga has played that was even competitive? Gordon or May will be 10 times the competition they have faced in any opponent this year. Newcastle will be their only real test and they are pretty darn solid. The outcome of the Tioga/Newcastle game will be very telling. Don't get me wrong, Tioga could be the real deal, but the footing to declare that at this point is really shaky. Newcastle is the easy favorite to win that district again. Their win over Aspermont was impressive and tells me they have really improved as the season has progressed.

Injuries are tough but Gordon has proven to have good depth this year as a lot of guys have had considerable playing time and have developed into solid starters. Their defense is better than it was last year and that could prove useful in the coming weeks. Gordon is not one of those teams that likes to run up the score on their opponents as they have plenty of talent to do so. They have ended the game on a few teams but really seemed to try not to (sometimes its just unavoidable). I think May is also inching their way back to the level they played at last year. It will be interesting to see how the Gordon/May game shakes out. Right now they both have to be the favorites in the Region as they both led it last year and seem to be hitting stride at the right time. The question will be if Gordon can make the quick turn around after beating their rival Strawn and clinching the playoffs. They couldn't pull it off last year in week 10 but did prove they weren't too far behind May when the Quarterfinals rolled around. I don't think the outcome of the game this week matters too much (other than a District Trophy).

Rochelle is really good and has one of the best coaches the area but do they have the full cast of players that can get them to the next level (or do they even need that)? They will get by the first round with no problem. Their trouble with Richland Springs in week one causes some questions as they were the Hornet's only tough challenge so far.

Zephyr has been a bit of a head scratcher as I was surprised they didnt fair better in those early losses. I don't know if they had some injuries or what. They certainly have the talent and coaching to do very well again this year.

May and Gordon have similar opponents but Gordon has not been healthy all year. We that being said I will take May in that match-up. Zephyr will win the region if they stay healthy. The biggest question is if any of these teams get to state can they play with the West?

Rochelle has a very good squad, one that may surprise people after the first round. I'm curious how many people that view the score from there only loss in week 1, were actually at the game or followed it close enough to understand the final score did not reflect how close that game really was. I know it does not really matter because that was week 1. Just don't write off Rochelle against, May...Gordon...or Zephyr.

I left Tioga off the list on purpose. They may be undefeated, but the best team they have beaten is Savoy, and honestly I cant dream of putting them in the same conversation with Zephyr, May, Gordon and Rochelle. I barely included Newcastle, and only as an afterthought, but they got in off tradition alone, and the ability to upset folks in the playoffs.

Rochelle probably had the best team of any of these mentioned in the early scrimmages. Besides RS, have they played a tough enough schedule to help them improve even more? Does the strength of schedule even matter?

If anyone watched May through thier two scrimmages and first game know that they had a deep hole to improve out of with their offensive line blocking. There was almost no blocking there. Going into this week the line is close to being playoff ready. Friday night will be their best test yet.

Rochelle and May have the two best athletes in this region, but there is a reason football is called a team sport.

If Rochelle stays healthy, they will go several games into the playoffs before anyone can touch them. I don't believe that May has improved enough to play with them yet .

maybe this is why they have the injuries ? Get it done quickly and your players are healthy when it counts.

Maybe. Maybe not. 2 of their 3 injuries I noticed occurred during the 1st half of games. The third during practice? (He played a full game in week 7, a game ended at the half. He did not suit in weeks 8 & 9.) But I agree with you. End the games as quickly as possible.
Gordon is a powerful, grinding team. They wear on their opponents. I don't expect them to win the east. I won't be surprised if they do.

As a Tioga homer I would like to add while we still do have a lot of games to play, the team has drastically improved this year, and we have a good offense this year as well! I am ready to watch these upcoming games!

Rochelle has the size and power to grind it out too. But why grind it out and bore the fans to death? With the likes of Flores and Mitchell, why not just score on every play? Gordon vs Rochelle might go for all four quarters, but I doubt it.

The object of the game is to have 1 more point than one's opponent when time expires. In a perfect world scoring every play while limiting one's opponent's score would be preferred. I defer to the coaching staff to determine the best way to defeat the opponent. I like all styles of football. Large disparities in talent leading to blowouts are boring to me.

I think that it all depends on which side you are on. If you are on the winning side, it can be very exciting. If you are on the wrong side, it's the pits.

No doubt!
Guess I was thinking as just a fan of the game...I do a lot of support work that frowns upon cheering and most of the games I see now, I view as an observer. Got to be a fan in the stands last week in Strawn and really enjoyed being a Gordon cheerleader!

I think that goes for both styles, fast paced or ground and pound.

Bryson 36
Tioga 32

Was NOT expecting that at all. Where did that come from? Bryson was completely off of my radar! Good job Cowboys!!!!!

I'm not surprise as I know Bryson really prepared for this game. Coach B is doing a good job over there. Tioga is solid but anybody can be beat on any given night. Congrats Cowboys!!! Go get it.

Coach Johnson.
