Calvert ISD's new AD/Head Football Coach

Calvert names Marcus Wortham Athletic Director/ Head football coach. I'm surprised there was only a handful of people that applied for this job. People in the town thought that it would be a long shot for Coach Wortham considering he only has a high school diploma. I'm sure the board realized they needed to hire someone whom the kids felt comfortable with.

No surprise there, why would anyone want to go there?

Perenial playoff team, from what I hear great kids. As a coach those would be 2 pretty strong arguments to go.

I knew as long as someone is employed full time by the district, they can coach. But I thought and Athletic Director had to have at least a bachelor's degree. That's interesting. Good luck to him and Calvert.

Its my understanding that the State of Texas requires all full time coaches to be degree'd and certified. Has something changed?

To be a coach you need to only be a full-time employee. A full time custodian or maintenance person could be a coach if the district allowed.

In Texas
all you have to be is a full-time employee
of that district.
As for AD duties,
those vary from school to school.
Most AD's
actually
direct their athletic dept.,
(which takes much more than just street smarts),
for some it's just a title.

Coach Wortham has lived in the community and worked hard in their athletic department for a years now. He waited patiently until his opportunity came and made the most of it. Congrats to him and the school. They have a very hard working man who will bring Calvert back to where it's supposed to be.

Coach Satcher I agree. Coach Wortham worked for Calvert in the late 90's, and was fired. Rumor has it that he had no re-hire on his application. He was hired back in 08'. He's from Calvert, graduated from Calvert, and he's worked there a total of 10 years on and off. In my opinion Calvert athletics has and always will be strong regardless of who's coaching.
