Jayton boys pull away from May for 50-36 win

CLYDE-"The Jayton Jaybirds are heading back to the regional tournament.

Led by Sheldon Burchett's 25 points and 13 more from Slade Coulter, Jayton (23-5) used a crucial third-quarter run to eliminate May with a 50-36 win at the Clyde High School gym.

Leading 20-14 at halftime, the Jaybirds seized control of the game with a 11-4 spurt to open the third quarter and never led by fewer than nine points through the remainder of the contest.

The Jaybirds now advance to the Region II-1A semifinals, where they will meet Lenorah Grady at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Abilene Christian University.

May, which closed its season at 25-5, got nine points from Eli Williams and eight apiece from Rocky Gage and Zach Davis.

"We came out of halftime and played really well," Jayton coach Ryan Bleiker said. "We hit some big shots and had a big steal that led to an easy layup.

"Once that happened, we kind of had things rolling our way, and we were able to string together some scores and stops."

Jayton's big third quarter was a reversal of sorts.

May, which trailed 9-2 after the first quarter, found its groove in the second, winning the period 12-11 to take some momentum and a confidence boost into the locker room.

That all changed early in the third quarter, with May hitting only two of 10 shot attempts, interspersed with six costly turnovers.

"We didn't shoot very well," May coach Steve Howard said. "A lot of their offense came from the free-throw line.

"I don't know what their percentage was on free throws, but they shot a lot more of them than we did."

That was especially true in a second half, which saw Jayton connect on 20 of 23 free throws. The Jaybirds were 26 of 33 from the line for the game, compared with 13 of 21 for May.

"I haven't seen the overall numbers yet," Bleiker said. "But I felt like we shot really well from the line tonight. And we've shot well from the line all year long."

May's final gasp came when a Davis layup at the 2:55 mark was followed by two free throws from Gage 14 seconds later to cut the Jayton lead to 45-36.

The Jaybirds, however, responded with a 5-0 run to close the game out.

"We're not a great offensive team, but we get after you on defense," Howard said. "I would say tonight was no different.

"We played hard defense. They just outscored us."

Grady boys end Jayton’s season in II-1A semifinals.

ABILENE-"A self-diagnosed and implemented adjustment - defensive hustle - was enough to lift No. 3 Lenorah Grady to a 75-61 win over No. 9 Jayton in Friday's Region II-1A semifinal matchup at Abilene Christian University's Moody Coliseum.

Jaylen Short scored 25 points and Braeden Jones added 23 more to pace Grady (28-3), which advances to face Menard in Saturday's regional championship game at 7 p.m. at ACU.

Jayton, which finished at 29-5, was led by Sheldon Burchett with 28 points and Tyler Seaton with 15.

Seaton scored 11 of his points before halftime - a key factor early on in keeping the Jaybirds close.

"They bothered us with their press," said Jayton coach Ryan Bleiker, whose club hit only two of nine shots in the third quarter. "It really slowed us down and we turned the ball over a few times in the second half, which got in our kids' heads.

"They got very timid and that caused even more turnovers, which led to easy points for them. But what it really did is get us out of our half-court offense."

Leading 34-32 with 5:05 left in the third quarter, the Wildcats closed the period with 14-4 run to take a 48-36 edge into fourth. This included buckets from five different players - the last a 3-pointer by Jones.

Grady maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game, and led by as many as 22 points when Short sank a layup with 2:35 left in the third.

"One of the things we've been working on all year long is, 'See man, see ball,'" Grady coach Chris Short said. "We did not do a good job in the first half. We gave them too much room to shoot.

"The adjustment was up to our kids. If they wanted a chance to play tomorrow, they had to come out and play a lot harder."

Other top contributors for Jayton were Slade Coulter with nine points and Clay Griswold with seven.

Grady got 13 points from Cole Avery and nine points from Kyle Garza.

"It was a great year and we had lots of fun," Bleiker said. "We got to experience a lot of things from San Antonio to Amarillo. It's a great group of kids. I love them to death.

"If my son grows up to be like these kids, I'll be very lucky."
