Big City 6-Man

Six-man expert
Just looking at the spreads for this week and noticed 6 teams from Dallas. I know San Antonio and Houston have fielded multiple teams for years. These are all what Goob used to call Church Schools that many public schools did not take seriously for years. Now some have to be. Dallas Covenant was a powerhouse the last couple of years. Abilene Christian has had a good team for years. Stephenville Faith beat a pretty good Gordon team a couple of years ago.
This is a good thing for the sport.
Any way this could be converted to the public version?
There are so many 2nd, 3rd, 4th team players in 11 man who never get a chance to play, and players who don't even try because of this. Let them play.
Inner city 6-Man, UIL sanctioned.
If you don't make the 1st or 2nd team you can (still) play.
Of course this is a nutty idea.

Laid an egg ("0") with this thread I guess. Pie in the Sky, in a perfect world.
But it would give those inner city kids something to do besides Basketball and gangs.
Though the 11 man world couldn't handle the idea.

Not sure what you're saying. Have the UIL allow inner city Private schools to play in the UIL or have a special inner City UIL league for six man? The main reason UIL doesn't allow them is because of their ability ) to recruit from the city (notice I didn't say they actually were doing it).

Well now that I've got my foot in my mouth... Inner city and big city teams could offer opportunities to play.
Both have kids who might play given that opportunity . Many of these 11 man teams have way more players than they need who never play or do so on a 2nd, 3rd or 4th team. If they don't make the 1st team let them play 6-man. On a say 12 player team. Schools like Allen and Plano could have multiple 6-man teams. They could play each other, private or existing public. I know, unrealistic. But if it gave kid's an opportunity to play as opposed to other things... I'd have loved to be an eligible receiver as a guard on the 11 man team I played on, catching a pass would have been way cool, even if highly unlikely.

Sounds like a great idea for participation for kids that don't have the physical attributes and skills needed to secure a roster spot in the 4A - 5A - 6A conferences.

The only anchor I see to this idea is going to be funding.
  • 1) Coaches ( unless you could get enough quality volunteers ) salaries
    2) Equipment - practice and game
    3) Facilities to play and practice ( will have to share with the big boys or travel to an alternate location )
    4) Travel expenses
    5) Officials

What are going to be the Title IX implications if it is UIL sanctioned ? Will you have to offer alternate programs for Girls Basketball ? You know how these legal things go … I am not getting a fair shake here kinda thing.

Don't mean to be Mr. Wet blanket here ...

That would be cool, but I don't think it should be UIL sanctioned. You will open a can of worms, and it will become very corrupt. They need to participate as club teams, privately funded. Those players just want to play for the love of the game, right? Then they won't mind not playing for post-season honors. If they want those, then they can stay as 4th team on their varsity. Just my opinion.
