Backfilling Missing Game Data

I just wanted to give a quick heads-up to everyone about something I'm going to do about archived games, slightly in hopes that some of you would correct me if I'm wrong about any of this.

Game Dates

I spent some time this morning looking through archives and trying to figure out when each season's "first Friday" was. Now what I'm going to do is write something that will automatically backfill every game in the archives with that week's Friday date. I know this won't put all games correct, but at least we'll have some kind of data and, hopefully, over the years the games can get corrected by folks pointing out the mistakes.

Here are the years, along with which week I'm considering the first week of the season, and the date of that week's Friday. Basically, every game during that year/week, that doesn't already have date/time info, will automatically be set to this date. These are just the "first Friday" dates, so each week following these will just add 7 days.

1994 - Week 1 - 9/2
1995 - Week 1 - 9/8
1996 - Week 1 - 9/6
1997 - Week 1 - 9/5
1998 - Week 1 - 9/4
1999 - Week 1 - 9/3
2000 - Week 0 - 8/25
2001 - Week 0 - 8/31
2002 - Week 0 - 8/30
2003 - Week 0 - 8/29
2004 - Week 0 - 8/27
2005 - Week 0 - 8/26
2006 - Week 0 - 9/1
2007 - Week 0 - 8/31
2008 - Week 0 - 8/29
2009 - Week 0 - 8/28
2010 - Week 0 - 8/27
2011 - Week 0 - 8/26
2012 - Week 0 - 8/31
2013 - Week 0 - 8/30
2014 - Week 1 - 8/29
2015 - Week 1 - 8/28
2016 - Week 1 - 8/26
2017 - Week 1 - 9/1
2018 - Week 1 - 8/31
2019 - Week 1 - 8/30
2020 - Week 1 - 8/28

Playoff Games

I recently added a designation to each game where, when viewing archives, games would be marked with a D for district, P for playoff, and C for championship. In order for those to be accurate, they've gotta be designated as such in the database too.

District games will be difficult to do as an automated process. I don't see a way to do it without having a lot of games incorrectly listed as district games. So, those will probably just take a lot of time to eventually get them all manually entered.

For playoff games, though, I went ahead and automated it a bit. I went ahead and automatically marked any game after week 11, in any season, as a playoff game.

I did go ahead and go through all the UIL state championship games from 1994 to now and marked those, as well as the private school state championship games I still have playoff brackets from for the last few years.

There are still a LOT of state championship games that need to be marked so if you know of any state championship games that aren't marked, please let me know so I can get those designated. The quickest way to tell if a state championship game is marked, or not, is to visit the team's overview page. You can get there by going to the main teams page and searching for the team there. If the game is marked as a championship game in the database, it will show up under "State championships" on that team's overview page. They'll display whether the team won or lost the game.

I went ahead and spent the time tonight, finally, importing the game data from the 2021 and 2022 seasons (my first seasons running the site) so now all of the game data that I've ever gotten on this site has been completely imported into the current database, as well as all data that I was given when I acquired the site from Granger. Anything that's still missing is simply data that I never had access to.

I'll work on getting the dates from 1994-2020 inserted sometime during the next week or so. I want to give a little more time for folks to chime in here and correct me if I'm wrong about any of these year's start dates.
