Aquilla?

Why aren't more people talking about this team? The young gentlemen are solid team. Not saying they would or could beat gordon, but the other teams ranked higher absolutely they vould.

They haven’t even played a top 20 team. Nobody knows how good they really are. But that’s a bold statement you just made either way. I remember they didn’t start in top 10 last year either, but because of light weight schedule they moved into top 10 and stayed for most of season. They truly didn’t belong there, and that became apparent towards the end of the season when they played Abbott in District and again in playoffs. 45’d both times I believe. Maybe they are the real deal this year but that’s where the skepticism comes from. I wish they would schedule some tougher pre-district games next year. Sure would help.

I hear ya, but unfortunately the common theme for the last 5 or 6 years is that there is a dominate team in both D1 and D2.
Aquila has a good team and could beat the vast majority of other teams but as you said, they are not beating Gordon. So really, that’s all anyone cares about.
I hate it that that’s the way it is because I’d love to go to Jerry world and see some good games. It just takes the fun out of things with both games (as in years past) being blowouts.

Actually sir they have atleast according to the rankings. No not the toughest schedule out there but not trash either. (Side note all the below listed games were won by mercy rule.) Also I'm in NO way comparing them to Gordon.

Wk. Team. Pre season. At time played
2. Perrin-Whitt. 17th 24th
3. Oakwood. 4th. 16th
4. Milford. 34th. 23rd
5. Jonesboro. 16th. 16th
7. Coolidge. 26th. 20th

Awesome, now check last year's schedule. Pretty sure they were undefeated except for both losses to Abbott and most games were won by mercy rule, not all but most. This happens every year, I am just saying maybe Aquilla is better this year when it counts. It does appear Abbott is down a bit so that should play well for your team. Heck I just answered the question with my opinion, didn't mean to offend anyone. Good luck to the Cougars!

Oh I wasn't disagreeing with that statement I was pointing out they haven't played a super weak schedule. Toughest no. But if you look at Mike's Toughest schedule list youll see the teams that are currently ranked above them have a weaker schedule ranking. Now what does that mean it means nothing at all honestly the rankings are pointless to me other than it being cool to see your home team highly ranked. At the end of the you don't get spotted any extra points in a game because of your ranking. I can't see anyone even coming close to hanging with Gordon on the field. All I know is at the end of the day these young men weather your team is ranked 1st or last put in a lot of hard work sweat and dedication to keep us old men entertained and give us things to talk about.

PS. Do they even play football in southeastern oklahoma 🤣. Sorry I had to I couldn't resist. My dad and his family are from Mcalester area.

You do realize, most of these schedules are put together more than a year in advance. Some are on the backend of a two-year commitment. Some teams are ranked in the Top 10 when you put them on the schedule, and then two years later, they're not even in the Top 50. Unless you start fresh every year, it's impossible to ensure you play Top 10 teams every year, much less every week.

Yes sir I do realize that. What region you coach in?

In all seriousness it just seems that Region is typically kind of weak with exception of Abbott most years. Several other teams that make a run every few years but normally its Abbott. I'm not trying to offend anyone at all, just my thoughts from following for a few years. Just different in the West where the competition is fierce and there always seems to be 4 or 5 teams beat the crap out of each other to see who wins that side of bracket. Kinda wish I would have stayed away from this thread. Geez....lol

I coached against Abbott and many other schools in that area, and I agree, Abbott is typically, and in my opinion, the standard for excellence in that area. Oakwood and Union Hill are perennial winners from the Region, while Aquilla, Avalon, Blum, Coolidge, Milford, Calvert and several others offer competitive programs who have ebbs and flows depending on talent surges. The other part of this debate, is schools like Jonesboro, Richland Springs, Gordon and Strawn, who are all elite programs, but are they East or West. Both the east and west have to deal with them when scheduling, but the west has always considered them west. I'm always lived and worked in the East, until recently when I moved to Weatherford. So, most of what I've witnessed has been Eastern schools. As long as the state championships come out of the west each year, there's really no debate.
