A public apology from a Robert Lee mom

11-man fan
My cousin, who lives in another district, has maintained that for the past few years, Robert Lee has the worst fans in basketball. I have always defended my hometown, but after last Tuesday's home game (against Blackwell) I feel led to apologize. There were several of us apalled by the lack of sportmanship from our girls team (when fouling out, they refused to shake the opposing coach's hand - even when instructed to by our coach) and the lack of good behavior from our cheerleaders and fans. I do not think it ever appropriate for cheerleaders to lean over a rail and yell awful things at the opposing players. Our cheers were not pro-Robert Lee, but rather negative about the other team. Our fans even began screaming things at the other coach over the rail. It was embarrassing!

Things were not always like this as they have changed the last few years. I do not expect our girls to change much as the coach has "good relations" with admin so there will be no reprimand or expectations set. I hope that our fans will return to being good hosts that are known for our sportmanship. I hope that we can rid ourselves of the "worst fans in the district" label.

I have never posted on this site before and hope that this was the appropriate place to do so.

GO STEERS!

Since it's your first time to post on this site I feel I should warn you that any minute now someone is gonna post a reply blasting your comment for some reason or another, but I too have been appalled by the behavior I've seen by some "adults" at high school basketball games. As far as the players go, any time a student-athlete disregards a coaches direct instructions especially invoving conduct in a public atmosphere they should be supended for atleast one game... but that would require support from the administration which you may or may not have.

Steermom87,

I commend you for your post!

I think every school has a fan or fans that are rude and out of line at times, but if any fan personalizes insults toward the players they should be ashamed of themselves and that kind of behavior should never be condoned.

Coaches are grown men and women so some badgering could be expected as long as it isn't to personal or insulting or vulgar of course. I know I have yelled at coaches who continually pressed an opposing team that they were beating by 30-50 points in the 4th quarter...those type of coaches should be yelled at in my opinion.

Long story short...you are a very good person to apologize for your school and to call on them to be better. I strongly suggest going to the school board and raising this issue with them...you may have better luck than an outsider.
