430 lb Bench Press

Most informed sixman players know about Miles' accomplishments, both on the field and in the weight room. Have used his bench prowess as a motivational tool for years. In fact Brody talked about his bench when a sophomore and how he wanted to some day duplicate his feat. Shamefully, I probably giggled like a third grader.

Techster, Brody's warmup was 220 lbs, but from now on he said he will add five to that. And your probably right...he could do considerably more if he warms up with less than 23 reps.

We will find out tomorrow...I hope.

Met Brody at the Fieldhouse 30 minutes before baseball practice to video his "Combine" bench. He added five pounds to make the bar 225. After a brief warm up everything was ready. He was a little apprehensive. I think a mist of doubt had drifted in to his mind since the first performance. After all, the point had been vividly made here that what he had accomplished was similar to some NFL Combine players . 'Had that Wednesday all been a dream'?

Finally, with Stetson manning the iPhone video, the moment of truth arrived. We looked at each other one last time as if to say, "See you on the other side", and off he went.

Before getting to the climax I should explain something I feel is vital to the scene both lifts. Remember Brody had hunted me down that day just so he could prove his claim of 370 lbs. He had stated it way back in October. That day of the first trial Brody had two motivations sweeping him into a lifting frenzy clearly evident by his quick, energized body language. The smooth-moving (that's a PC term for unhurried, slow) Brody rarely exerted more speed than a double-time tortoise would. And I know what that velocity was because I have raced him many times to the cafeteria...and was victorious more than once.
Now on that Wednesday Brody had taken an Economics test which according to several seniors had wiped him out, and even sent him into that violent inner place he rarely liked to go. Realizing where he was emotionally, he tried to turn to the fairer sex, but then realized he had no girlfriend to comfort him. This depressing realization sent Brody to his emotional Armageddon. He decided to turn that vigorous state into something positive...and rest you know.

Now, flash forward to today, all that accidental stimulus was absent. There was no Economics test and since the first lift some sort of romance had blossomed. Kiddin. He was ready.

Oh, I forgot to say that the entire lift was videoed, or maybe I did mention that already. Anyway, as soon as Stetson returns from baseball practice he will upload and let the video describe the rest. (:

Just joking. The video is on its way where you will see him do 225 lbs 21 times. Right after that his baseball coach walked in and herded them onto a bus for practice.

Ol' gus, I've always avoided the appearance of baiting with false hope, so forgive me for saying "my bencher is better than yourn". (:

All foolishness aside. I have been talking to a couple of the football/track coaches from Canadian the past couple of track meets, and heard some amazing stuff. Most of their heavy lifting is done early in the mornings before and during the seasons. The players on the earlier state champion teams would meet to lift around 6 or 6:30 and lift hard for strength and power. They have had several players over the last six or eight years routinely bench 400 to 450 lbs.

At one meet I had the pleasure of speaking to their stud receiver, named Galla, from this year's championship team, and realized he wasn't very big, nor thick in the chest. I also noticed that their QB was built likewise, though considerably taller. We just stood there surprised at their small frames.

Let me not be misunderstood, both those boys are players in every sense of the word. Both also played huge roles on their state championship basketball teams. Galla has big time moves at guard while the QB is a dangerous post player. While speaking with Galla I asked him how long his fractured arm and foot were going to keep him out, which by the way he played several basketball playoff games with both, and he smilingly said that the Dr. had cleared him that very day. He said he would be running in the district track meet. He was standing there with his foot in a boot, and I thought I had felt a brace on his arm when I shook his hand. His demeanor and countenance radiated toughness and determination. His smile seemed to say 'we're going to take state in track, too'.

Don't bet against 'em.

My point is, I suppose, sometimes the smallest, unassuming guys are your best big-time players. Not everyone can nor needs to lift a refrigerator in order to make plays that win state titles.
